check mdapplicants: about 32 people list themselves as accepted to Duke per year. so far about 8 people in 2007 listed themselves as accepted. one might say that only 1/4 of the acceptances have been mailed out. yes, this is very flawed speculation, but hey, everyone has their theories. hope for the best tomorrow!

Has anyone heard of any non-acceptance decisions yet? It seems like the first "wave" contained only acceptances. If this is true, then the chances of receiving a waitlist/rejection letter goes up for the rest of us... 🙁

To the Duke undergrads here-- Duke Med loves to take its undergrads off the waitlist, my guess is because Duke Med knows they know the area and the school well and would most likely attend if admitted. In fact, most of the undergrads (except for some) get waitlisted and several get off of the waitlist. So even if you get waitlisted, definitely don't lose hope. Although that goes for everyone else as well 🙂

Oh and just wanted to add that Duke does outright reject some of its undergrad applicants, so if you do get waitlisted don't think it's just a "courtesy waitlist."

eh. sorry everyone for bringing the pessimism into the room.

when i picture the 2-3 day period of acceptance letters coming out, I also, along with it picture the 2-3 day period of when dreams are crushed. i think the situation would become incredibly awkward even in the likes of an anonymous forum.

maybe im pessimistic in general about this whole process. i probably am. actually, i know i am. this year is primed with insane premeds more than other years past (from what different schools have told me, and from hearsay)

Uhhhmm... they were sent USPS First-Class, not Priority Mail. That's why postage was only 87 cents. 3 ounces of mail in a large envelope costs $0.87, while Priority Mail would cost $4.05.

Sorry to be nitpicky, but people should keep their eyes peeled for a manila envelope, not one of those flat-rate Priority Mail envelopes.

ok you all! let's be optimistic about this whole thing. Only a handful of us have gotten acceptances, and no one has recieved a letter over the last couple of days. Of course, not all the acceptances have gone out yet. Otherwise, there would be a lot more people posting on SDN than we have seen. My intuition tells me that more than 8 people would not be able to resist posting their acceptance to Duke here on SDN, especially since Duke will probably be accepting more than 120 individuals.

I would like to say I am remaining positive, but I would be lieing. I think at this point even if I do get an acceptance, i will not be as jubilant as I would have been earlier in the week as I am pretty much drained at this point. But...I still do not regret any countdowns we had going, and I still think Duke Med is an amazing, innovative institution regardless of whether they want me there or not 😀 .....

Did you read this? It's probably true.

Okay, so I JUST called Duke a few seconds ago and was fortunate to speak to the nice office administrator--I forgot his name. Anyway, he was nice enough to explain that NOT ALL ACCEPTANCES have been sent out. So you're wrong buddy--there is still hope! We're probably dealing with a very bitter person. So for everyone who is still awaiting, according to the Duke's administrator they "are still sending letters of all sorts out until tomorrow." Remember... relax!

Letters are still going out, and the majority are probably still in transit. Be patient.

I'm in SoCal, so I'll probably be along the last to hear one way or another.

So current duke students, could you answer a question: is there a difference between "alternate list" and "waitlist" or is it all the same?...so I broke down and called in a favor to check on my application status and found out I am placed on an "alternate list"..boooo...Mr.Burns gives me hope because if I recall she was accepted off the waitlist right? I do have other acceptances but Duke was by farrrrrr my first choice so here's to more waiting..ughh👎 ....genuine congrats to those accepted, hopefully I will be joining the ranks in the future...

No, alternate list = waitlist. I got in off the waitlist too, as did quite a few of my classmates. If you feel strongly about Duke, I would recommend writing an update letter/LOI.

If you know you'd come to Duke over anywhere else, write a letter of intent rather than a letter of interest. I'm not saying it necessarily worked, but diosa and I both sent one and we're here, so it couldn't have hurt...

I go to the mailbox and open the damn thing and lo and behold, there is a big, thick USPS priority package in there.
Now I know Duke is sending out those vanilla envelopes, but for 1 millisecond I thought that maybe they'd ran out of those and sent it in those regular packages. As soon as I touched the package, I realized that it was the Obama for president T-shirt I'd ordered like a month ago, but they'd been backordered until now. It hurts to be disappointed like this, but I can tell you one thing for sure: for that millisecond when I thought I had been accepted, I felt like I was in heaven. 😍

Yeah, these past couple of days have made me (and I'm sure others here as well) feel completely lame!! For instance, I actually sat my *ss outside today for about 15 minutes waiting for the mailperson. It's the same reason why you send LOIs via snail mail... considered "classier." I don't really buy that, though. I got my first acceptance via email and I think I was as ecstatic as I would have been had it come in the mail. (Although I would be insulted to be rejected via email... I suppose that's hypocritical.)

I remember for Duke's ugrad you could get your status online. That was great.

The wait is absolutely killing me.

Right... Not only is emailing free, but its also faster and more dependable. WTF? I understand they are sending additional papers with acceptances, but come on... the entire application and interview invite was done through email.. come on!!😎👎

I was mulling over how easy, straightforward, timely, and simple it would have been just to update the status page, when I thought: given Duke's IT issues this year... maybe if I were the adcom, I'd be handwriting the letters to avoid any computer involvement whatsoever. 😛
