Dumb Question about the Match

I have a dumb question. I'm not starting medical school until this fall, but I was reading about matching for your residency. I was wondering do you have go through the match? Can you secure a residency without it?

Until this year you were able to sign contracts outside the match. This however is the last year for that. After this, all applicants (US and Independent) will have to go through the match.
