During Re-app, MBA or MS

How do adcomms feel about MBAs compaired to MS. I am a non-trad and I really don't want to enroll in a 2year MS program and then go to dent. school. I think adcomms see through the 1 year MS programs, so I was thinking MBA. Since I am a bio major I thought some buisness classes would be helpful in running a sucessful practice. Whatcha think?

It depends on your GPA. If you have a 3.5+ sci and cumulative GPA, then maybe an MBA might not be bad for future business knowledge.

However if you are getting a masters to enhance your application (low GPA), then I highly recommend an M.S.. I did a non-thesis M.S. after I got rejected my first time, and it certainly helped me get in the second time.

drpduck . . . I agree with you. If you already have a decent science GPA, why do a Masters at all? But if it's your science GPA that you need to bring up, then a Masters would enable you to show case your ability in upper level sciences.

Yeah I have a 3.4 science and after this semester should be a 3.5 or so, My cum GPA is lower due to my first attempt at college 9 years ago. I have returned and done three solid years receiving honors every semester. Most of my sciences were taken recently so I don't think my science GPA is a problem. I know that there are a few colleges that offer 1 year MBA's (14months or so) for well qualified canadates. University of New Hampshire, Babson College ect.

Do you think if you contact the particular school(s) you are intrested in and present them with your situation they would help? Maybe someone in the admissions office would be nice enough to provide some info? I don't know if they do this (probably not tho) but just a suggestion.

I had one post-rejection interview with a dental school and they did not give a lot of credit to SMP and would greatly prefer a traditional MS.

A MBA is pointless in proving that you can handle hard science classes in dental school.

just to clarify, SMP = non-thesis master (i.e. special masters program) and traditional MS = 2 year thesis program? Is this what you are saying?

Just to let you know there are MBA programs that spank a DDS/DMD programs in the ass. The talent they recruit is amazing. And I'm saying the top 50 MBA programs will out talent the DDS/DMD pool by far.

And just to let you know I have my MBA from UF so I can speak from experience

I don't think that it about spanking😱 jj. They're just different. I happen to know that the two colleges/univ. I mentioned before rank in the top 10 for entrepreneurial ventureship so their not BS, but I think I would do well and bring what I learn to open a sucessful practice. That is contigient on the fact that I am not enrolled this year.

Each one has no direct bearing on getting into dental school.

An MBA in most cases will not help you get into dental school. If your science GPA sucks, a Masters program that has science classes will help and one that does not have science classes will not. I spoke will several adcom memebers and two deans who agreed and said it would be a waste of time to do any sort of masters if it was not a science one. Now if by some strange reason you have an extremely high science GPA and low overall then possibly an MBA or other non-science masters would help.

I applied to it this year while also applying to d-school so that I would have somewhere to go in the event that I didn't get into any dental programs, and I got in. I was accepted to NYU d-school this year, though, so I won't be attending Dartmouth... but I imagine that an MPH from an Ivy couldn't possibly *hurt* your record!

Not that this really applies to the OP, but for others reading; don't count on an MPH making up for a lower gpa. Most MPH's lack upper level science coursework, but rather have classes which will not really prove your ability to handle science courses. I think name is overrated as well. My M.S. from Hopkins out of the 8 courses I've taken thus far, I've had one B+, with the rest being A- or higher. Granted my undergrad gpa (3.05) was pretty poor, but a great GPA from a respectable university with graduate level science courses only got me one interview and acceptance (not that I'm complaining in the least bit!!). I would highly recommend against an MPH unless you really have an interest in public health. It really won't help you get into dental school, unless you already had a great GPA before the MPH.

I seem to recall that some schools really focus on public health - ie. ASDOH. Possibly others on the list as well... Either way, I agree that most schools seem interested in your ability to do high level science but also that you not be a shut-in with not interest in or knowledge of larger societal issues. I suggest you call a school you applied to and pose the question of which course of study would make you a stronger candidate. Of course, you are ultimately interested in dentistry - you are simply seeking advice on how to better round out your application.

The MPH is a tough degree to market by itself. Then again so is a MS in bioscience if you aren't in the right city.
