EARLY DECISION PROGRAMS

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
WELCOME TO SDN!!! 😀

I recommend you go through the www.aacom.org website....

I took the liberty to go through each school description at AACOM website and found out the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) was the only one that indicated any early decision programs....

If I find out anything else I'll post, but other than that I hope you enjoy SDN!!!

Is this true? Is MUSCOM the only one with and EDP? anybody?

Just wanted to clarify... that MSUCOM was the only school that I could find that indicated that they have EDP... otherwise, that's the extent of my time to search things for now... If I find out anything, I'll post it up....

So does anyone else know if there are other osteopathic med schools that have EDP?

KCOM has the EDP. That is how I applyied. I am glad I did.

To apply for the EDP at KCOM do I need to have really high numbers (GPA, MCAT)? Do they have to be a lot higher than the averages numbers for accepted students? Thanks?

LECOM has 3 - 4 programs with certain undergrad schools, like Edinboro Univ. of PA, Duquesne, Allegheny, Mercyhurst and others. There are certain GPA and MCAT scores needed to be accepted. You complete 3 years at the undergrad school and the first year at LECOM is considered your final year for a B.S. You can become a D.O. in 7 years. I know of 2 people who did this and are doing fine. A third person failed her first semester of medical school and entered the post bac program for the spring. She will be given another chance this fall.
It is my opinion that if your biological science and chemistry/biochemistry is weak, you will struggle in you first year.

Gator,
I don't think you have to have super high numbers to apply. I don't remember the numbers. The admissions ladies are wonderful. Call them and ask they will be more than willing to help.

Let me know if you don't get the information you are looking for. (send me an e-mail [email protected]) and after I get back to school next week I will see what I can find out. We are on or post boards vacation right now so I am not in the 'Ville.

Thanks for your help. I have already turned in my AACOM application but I just wanted to know about EDP. Would it not be better to apply to all the schools (that you want to go to) than to just one school through EDP?

yes it is true MSUCOM is the only one with an Early Desicion program. ALso, it is very tough to get into. I guessyou have to have stellar stats i mean above 3.6 or 3.7 with a 30 mcat and a strong appreciation towards osteopathic medicine

dude 7,

others have said that KCOM and COMP have EDP? who's right and who's wrong with their info?

just wondering.....

I know tht KCOM has EDP. As I can say I applied EDP through KCOM. I had to agree to apply to no other schools and to go to KCOM if they accepted me etc. Just like through ACGME programs.

Gator,
You asked why not just apply to all schools you were interested in. My reason was money. I felt I had a good shot to get into any program that I applied to. My fear was that while KCOM was my first choice that I might bet accepted to another school give them my deposit only to find out later that I was accepted to KCOM. I couldn't afford to lose that money. by applying EDP I knew the first week of August if KCOM was accepting me. If they had said know I could have applied to other schools that same week and not have been too far behind.
Applying EDP may not be for everyone but it worked well for me.

TCOM has an EDP, but I believe it's only for in state applicants.

Whoa, everyone...

Let's start putting down the truth instead of rumors.

Unless they eliminated it in the last calendar year, Western U/ COMP has Early Decision. *I* applied, and was accepted, as an early decision candidate at WU.

Maybe we aren't all on the same wavelength regarding what ED is: it's where you choose just ONE, and only one, medical school to apply to. They agree to interview you first (if you're qualified; if not, they won't even let you apply ED), and agree to get back to you -quickly-.

I applied ED (I could be wrong, but I think the minimums were MCAT 29-30 (hell, maybe it was 27), and Minimum GPA of 3.3); I interviewed on Aug. 10?, and received my certified letter of acceptance on Aug 20. (that's pretty damn fast). Thus, I could coast the rest of the year, knowing that I already got into med school.

If you're serious about ED, I'd go to that school's website, or better yet call their admissions departments. Do not rely on the info in this post....

I definately agree with Paul. The way KCOM did ED the year I applied is similar to what Paul said but they did not hold the interview until October 1st.
