So, in high school (if I remember correctly) early decision increased your chances of getting accepted to a university. I've heard that this isn't the case with medical school, and actually your stats should be more impressive if you are applying early decision. Is this true?

Early decision is rarely useful for any med school applicant. By applying EDP, you limit yourself to that one school and cannot apply to any others until their decision is reached. This puts you at a disadvantage for all the other schools because you enter the cycle later than most applicants.

I would not suggest EDP unless you are 100 % sure you want to go to that school, or you have some in at a particular medical school that gives you the impression you will get in. Otherwise, it is not advisable to put all your eggs in one basket...

I know for a fact (after talking to offices) that EDP is a very special option for people who have a compelling reason to be tied down to one school, most often due to a significant other or particular family situations. If you do not have such a reason that you MUST go to one school and one school only, it won't turn out well. Most schools advise that you contact their office before deciding to go EDP so that they can talk you out of it if you are not the target population. And yes, the offices have told me that you want to be ideally above the median for that school.

In my case, yes I really want to attend this school. EVMS likes locals and I would like that too. I know faculty, the hospitals in the area, have a good job, etc.

Then go ahead and apply and see what happens. Just understand that if it doesn't work out, your application cycle will be severely handicapped as a result. Even if you're an extremely strong applicant, you likely won't fare as well as you otherwise would have because of the delay. At worst, you won't be able to apply to any other schools until October, which is pretty late.

...you're not hearing me. that's not enough of a reason to go EDP. None of those things are compelling. Ex: I really want to attend HMS. They love Harvard people and I would like that too. I know plenty of people there as well. Does this mean I should apply EDP to HMS (if they even had EDP)? No. I am not married and do not have significant burdens that would require me to be in Boston.

But contact the office and see what they say. In any case, like I mentioned, offices want you to contact them before doing EDP blindly. why won't you follow directions?
"Applicants are strongly urged to contact the Office of Admissions prior to applying to the Early Decision Program." https://www.evms.edu/education/doctoral_programs/doctor_of_medicine/early_decision_program/

@skooper don't be rude. I already knew to call them, I just thought you could tell me something I didn't already know 🙂

nah we cool
but I hope the part about having a srsly compelling reason to attend helps as you try to canoodle your way into EDP though. bc it's true

I'm applying EDP to EVMS next cycle because my husband is stationed in Norfolk for the next 6 years which pretty much keeps me from moving anywhere else. When you call, they'll encourage you to meet with Dr. Kimble or Susan where they will try to do whatever they can to convince you NOT to apply EDP.

I'd only recommend it if EVMS is the ONLY school you want to apply to and you'll be content enough not getting into a school if EVMS rejects you.

(I'm crossing my fingers for their love of HR locals.)
