Hi everyone. I was wondering if you guys had any ideas about which schools are the easist MD schools in the US to get into. I checked out USNews.com, and they list most of the schools (about 100) and not the rest of them. So, I was wondering if there could be easy schools that were not put on the list.

Any help is appreciated! 😀

http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/start.htm gives a lot of stats, you could look at item 3 - Applicants and Matriculants by school and sex, and calculate the percentages. That will give you an idea of which schools are the hardest and which schools are the easiest.

Dude. This thread always starts a fight.
Apply to schools that are closest to your own stats. Apply to some schools above and below your stats. Also, it depends on what state you are coming from, where you went to school, on and on and on. Let's just not get into a discussion about which schools are "low-tier" or reach schools or whatever, because a reach for someone may be a safety for someone else, and the whole thing turns into a giant pissing contest. 🙄

this is a game of economics where the schools that are "easier" to get into will inherently get more applicants, thus increasing their competitiveness. If you want an easy way in, I'd move to a state that accepts a large percentage of instate applicants into its med schools like Texas or either of the Dakotas.

You're a senior member, you should have been around the forums enough to realize that with American med school admissions, that "easy" is never quite easy...

There are no "easy" schools out of the 120 some-odd allo schools. That's not a lot of schools and not a lot of seats compared to the tens of thousands of applicants who are shooting for them. The average matriculant stats over all of them is approx 3.5/30. If you have the stats for allo, then apply. If not, then find a way to improve your stats (with post bac, MCAT retake or whatever). Nuff said.

Ok, so true, there are no "easy" schools, but obviously some schools are easier to get into others. Unless you live in CA or another difficult state, your state schools may be your best chance. I live in Ohio, so my state schools are probably "easiest" to get into for me, personally. (or at least I hope!)

Look at schools that have the lowest avg MCAT and GPA in the MSAR. This should give you some idea of some lower-tier schools.

I live in FL so I think my best bets are FSU, UF, USF, Miami. Maybe UF might be my easiest since I just graduated from there, but maybe not.

Sure, but if the OP was looking for the "easy" schools that weren't on the US News 100 top schools list, she is going to be a bit disappointed by the minimal drop off after that number. And as some others have indicated, some of the unranked schools get a ton of applicants precisely because people think they have a better shot.

There are no schools that are "easy" to get into. There are some that are easier though, and easier generally means lower average stats (like GPA and MCAT) It's only easier in the sense that it's easier to do badly on the MCAT and your GPA than it is to do well. Check out the MSAR book available at the AAMC website, they have schools listed with stats, and you can get a general idea of which ones might be easier.

There are no "easy" med schools though, and the process is very random.

MD Schools with lowest Average GPA (all:
-Ponce (Puerto Rico) (3.43)
-EVMS (3.44)
-Drexel (3.45)
-NYMC (3.5)
-Jeff (3.5)
-VCU (3.5)

according to this years MSAR, NYMCs avg gpa is 3.6, and there mcat is a little above 31 (a little above the national avg). I also am pretty sure jeffersons is above 3.5, and im sure the mcat is above the national avg, so that being said about half the schools in the country are 'easier' to get into than those two schools. but keep in mind no school is really 'easy' to get into.

The Jefferson GPA surprises me. I always thought they were more uppier tier.

Yeah jeff is 3.57.

Here's the lowest 10 U.S. Allo. by gpa...all out of state. (I could have missed a few)

School GPA MCAT % accepted

Drexel 3.44 31 12
RFU/CMS 3.45 29 7.4
Virg Commonwealth Un. 3.5 28 4.4
U of Vermont 3.5 28.5 4.5
NYMC 3.5 30 9
Albany Medical College 3.5 30
George Washington 3.56 30
Jefferson Med College 3.57 31 5
Temple 3.59 30 5.6
U of Cincinnati 3.59 30 5.4

I think one of the most important and neglected stats is the % accepted. Statistically this is a huge factor, especially when applying to ~20 schools, except you do have to weigh them based on the applicant pool.

The upper teir make me want to cry:
UCSF 3.79 34 6.6
U Penn 3.79 35 4.3
Columbia 3.79 35.5
Duke 3.8 36 4.3
Mayo 3.82 32.5 2
Hopkins 3.84 34.5 5.8
Wash University 3.85 37 10

Oh, and if you're not crying yet and you're from Cali:

Stanford 3.71 33 2.4% Out of state- 3.15%

That's In-State. Something wrong with this picture? Yes, yes there is. Why do our med schools have to be so good? Can't we have a couple more UC Davis's?

??? Davis is still a reach for most people. It's numbers are higher than Boston University, which isn't a slouch either.

Exactly, and that's the easiest school in Cali.

Although, the two are comparable but it's numbers are not higher than BU, it has a lower GPA and MCAT and a higher acceptance rate, assuming the applicant is from Cali:

BU 3.65 32 4.2%
UCD 3.61 31 5.7%

Anyway, I meant no disrespect to UCD. My point was actually the opposite, I want more UCD's because I would pretty much kill to go to any UC, UCD included.

Davis has the reputation as the "easiest" med school for a CA resident to get into. The UCs don't have in-state quotas or exclusivity like many other state systems so us CA residents just get screwed.

You forgot Meharry (3.15 overall, 2.93 😱 science, 25) and Howard (3.32 overall, 3.1 science, 24)

Those schools have a unique history and focus. Let's not start a flame war here or another AA battle.

Not my intention. But they are accredited M.D.-granting institutions, so any list of schools with lower admissions standards is incomplete without these schools.

There it is right there.

I was about to say - don't forget good 'ol Howard! I didn't know about Meharry but I can venture a guess as to what's going on there without having to break out the MSAR.

oh wait. here come the "i'm not racist, but.." comments.

I'm not racist but how come howard is so easy to get into, and the only requirment is being black

The difference being...what?

Option 1 - I am racist. (Howard's average MCAT is 25 and 76% of their class is black)
Option 2 - I am not racist (Howard's average MCAT is 25 and 76% of their class is black)

So...what's your point?

^ Being black isn't a requirement to get into Howard.

No...and a 35 MCAT isn't a requirement to get into Harvard either, but it sure helps.

My point is that you came off as a pompus jerk in your first post. Who are you to judge the validity of a certain med school's admission requirements? Your comment was unnecessary and elitist.

I'm gonna go with option one for you. It's sad that that can be deduced from the first sentence you posted in this thread.

Let me guess. You're some rich white guy.

Now who's stereotyping? 😉

Yup. That's sort of the theory behind a Historically Black College.

Oy Vey! Here we go again...Can someone open up an *Official* AA thread to throw down in? Although it might be kind of pointless as the conversation would probably go like this:

White/Asian (both eastern and southern) guy - AA is unfair. Why should underqualified people get in while good students are turned away...

Black/Mexican Guy - AA is necessary. It inceases diversity, and gives oppurtunites to those who...

coco11 said:

I have made no such judgement.

Oh, and by the way - if I were to make said judgement - I would have exactly the same right to attack it as you would to defend it.

being on SDN and listening to people obsess over numbers like this gives me insight into why the majority of my son's doctors are such utter jackasses. thanks SDN! 🙂

Tanner82 said:

Why would you post something like that?

The easiest school for most people to get into is their own state school. Exceptions are states like CA where there's a ton of qualified people who get rejected.

As for private schools, I think it was mentioned the schools with the lower GPA/MCAT combo. However, the admissions can't always be reduced to mere numbers game. There's a certain randomness in the process which makes it difficult to predict if you will get into this or that school. Since even lower tiered schools will get tons of applicants, there's no guarantee, barring super numbers, that you'll get noticed (and even then, a lousy interview could blow your chance).

The best approach is to compile a list of schools that are within your range. Put in some reaches and schools which have numbers below your range. Make sure your list is large, and pray. As long as you have a good overall app, chances are, at least one med school will accept you, but it may surprise you which one.

So what if 76% of Howard's matriculants are black? What percentage of the applicants do you think are black? Probably close to 76%. I don't see the problem here.

The only thing funny about that was imagining Bob Saget saying that.

All joking aside, I'm with Wonder Woman here.

And I thought people would have gotten this all temporarily out of their systems with Dr. Eugenic's many threads this weekend. Was I ever wrong 🙄 .

I hear Hopkins is pretty easy to get into.

It's Danny Tanner, not Bob Saget.

o man we had to move ourselves into the AA sector. I already have argued this to the wits end, and eventually that thread was moved into Dr.'s Lounge in the everyone thread. Duke it out there. the reason why im over 500 posts is probably majorly in part to AA arguemnets. no more!!

its both actually....

if you are so curious as to why Howard has so many black students, why don't you apply there yourself?

I DONT think hes black.....

im sure ull get weeded out once they figure you have absolutely no connection to that school, demonstrate no diversity committment in your CV (racial minority clubs, etc. etc.) and will probably come to the conclusion that ur using them as a safety.

according to the MSAR, there are several caucasians at Howard.

I'm thinking as a white male, 1st gen American, with both parents from South Africe (Cape Town and Johannesburg) I'd make a pretty good candidate for Howard/Meharry. I mean, I'm more African American than probably 90% of their respective student bodies!!
