Hello!

Has anyone applied to EMU for OT? It's my first year applying and I was curious as to the process. The app was due 8/1 and they will let us know by October. There are interviews and classes start in January! Thanks for any help! 😊

Hi,

I applied to the program as well. Sharon Holt, the OT advisor, actually told me that they will not be conducting interviews this year. She also told me that we would receive decisions by mid-late September. Where did you hear October?

Oh my gosh! Thank you for that! I actually live in Oregon and have been checking my mail every day! I was getting worried that I was going to have to pay $1000+ for a flight! Thank you and good luck to you!

I thought I heard that at one of group sessions they did interviews and we would be notified of acceptance in October. Maybe I misunderstood!

Hi - I've applied to EMU as well. Since it is a career change move for me and I live in the area, it's the only place I applied, eek! I have maintained good contact with Sharon Holt throughout my application process so I hope that bodes well. Although I never heard about there not being interviews this year, she did say that we would hear back "about portfolios" by mid-September. I had my "group session" (nobody showed up so it ended up being our individual session, I guess) in April 2012 and she told me the same thing about mid-October, and the OT I'd been doing volunteer time with had another volunteer who got her notice from EMU in October 2012.

Anyway, here we are, September 16, and I'm antsy! Everyone, please keep us updated on your status!! I have been watching thegradcafe.com too to see if anyone's posted. 😱

Just out of curiosity, when did you hear this from Sharon? After the application deadline? I wonder how many applicants they got this year...

I went to the info session in September, 2012 and they were still talking about interviews as well. Must be something new this year.

I'm just as antsy! I thought maybe someone heard because there was a new post! I too heard about interviews and that was in April of 2013. So not too long ago. I live in Oregon, so I'm sure you will hear before me. I will post as soon as I hear something.

I will do the same!!! I have a friend who's in the program now and I just sent her a message asking what method she was contacted by (e-mail, postal, etc). So I'll let you know once I find out... eeek! When I first met with Sharon, she said "it's all in the interview" as far as being accepted... because I was worried about having a degree in another field (I got my bachelor's in 06!) and not having spectacular grades, although I did excellent in my pre-reqs, for working full time and not having been in school for a while. 🙂 So part of me wants an interview to show what "real world" experience has done to help me prepare, but at the same time, it TERRIFIES me!

Hey everyone,

Sharon told me that there would be no interviews this year at the final group session in August (2013). So there will definitely not be interviews this year. Also, I emailed her last week asking when applicants can expect to receive a decision, and she said to expect one within the next few weeks, but closer to the end of the month (September 2013). I'm hoping we hear back this week, but if not this week then it should definitely be next. Also, she said they got a new program director and she is still figuring out how to let applicants know. Sharon said she was looking into email right now but wasn't sure. Hope this helps!

I wonder what the reason is for not having interviews this year... the change in faculty or fewer than the usual number of applicants?

Anyone heard? 🙂 I am excited but nervous and just want to know!!

I take it nobody's heard anything, still? The anxiety is getting to me!!! 😱

Just got an email from the advisor. We will get to know on 18th OCT.... 🙂🙂🙂

I got it too. That sounds like soooo far away. 🙁

same here! I was hoping to know by the end of the month! Oh well now we have a date and also the way they will notify! Maybe it will be earlier!! :xf: :xf:

Good luck, everyone. Just out of curiosity, where did you all apply besides EMU and is EMU your top choice?

I don't know what my chances are, but I'm hoping as more of a "non-traditional" student I might have an interesting edge - I have a journalism degree and have worked in fundraising for the past 6 years and have wanted to do OT since I was an undergrad. At the time (at GVSU) I was homesick and ready to be done with school and not thinking I could go to grad school. I told myself, "if I really want to be an OT, then someday, I will!" So here I am. 🙂

My undergrad GPA wasn't spectacular - 3.018
My pre-req GPA was around a 3.5 I think - hard to calculate it right now because I did them at both EMU and WCC.

My GRE was 151 Quant and 155 Verbal and 5 in AW.

Anyone else want to share? 😳

aww, that's not so bad!! it was a lot harder than I thought, especially the math. I kept running out of time!! I postponed it 3x because I kept putting off studying and ended up cramming til the last minute. I'm sure your score will be just fine. I think Sharon had said they look for around a 295 combined but I can't remember. I hate this wait!!

Sharon said they consider 297 - 300 as a good score. So i am weak in that area but have managed a 4.0 GPA. So lets see..Fingers crossed 🙂

Literally counting down the days... is anyone else dying to find out??

Me!!! I thought when someone posted that someone heard! Hoping we don't have to wait until the 18th!! Good luck!!

This is the week!! Let's hope that we don't have to wait till Friday!!! :xf: :xf:

Agreed!!! I have been going crazy waiting to hear back. I think I refreshed my email 30 times on Friday lol. I'm hoping they will let us know tomorrow! But let's be real... it will probably be Friday at 5pm haha. Best of luck to you!

It probably will be Friday at 5! Haha! It's going to be the longest week EVER!

Tell me about it, I've had a "countdown" going on my desk ever since we found out the date just so I can at least see that time is passing. I feel sick over it. I know one girl who is in the program now who shared her grades and other portfolio content with me and it wasn't spectacular at all and she was accepted (although that was when they still did interviews, which I still feel are necessary!) and all of the OT's at UM that I've worked with got in on their first try. I almost wish we didn't know just how competitive it was because it creates so much more anxiety! Fingers crossed we hear before Friday at 5 pm.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh can't stop refreshing my e-mail....

Ahhhhh me too!!! I really hope they tell us today... I'm kind of worried they are going to extend it again.

I really feel like that too... Unless it's going to be at the very end of the day....

Ahhh you guyssss anytime anyone responds I get an e-mail and then I think it's "the" e-mail... Maybe we should make a pact to not reply to the thread til one of us gets news 🙂 🙂 🙂

Has anyone asked why we didn't get the decision today??

check again... I got mine. I was waitlisted. I'm devastated. I dont know what the chances of enough people declining are, but I'm trying to remain positive. 🙁

Congrats on being waitlisted... I was denied... 🙁 I am devastated.. I decided I am not applying again. I have been applying for 4.5 years. 🙁 My fingers are crossed for you!

thank you. i'm so sorry to hear. don't give up if it's what you really want. I can't imagine how youre feeling since this is only my first time applying anywhere. message me if you want to talk! what a crappy day.

What is your waitlist number? mine is 18

20 🙁 i don't know what our chances are of that many people declining offers. I'm so upset.

Does anyone know what the GRE cutoff was this time?? I think i didn't get just because of that and maybe my essay was not that impressive.

Well, if you got waitlisted I don't know if that's the problem at all. I never heard of there being a "cut off" but just what they looked for as a good score... 297 combined I think? Are you accepting the waitlist position or declining? I was looking at results on thegradcafe.com and someone posted their acceptance and had a 143 Q and 157 V GRE... and they got accepted elsewhere so they aren't going to take the EMU offer. Let's hope that happens 19 more times... :/

I felt great about my reflective writing and my volunteer references as well. Thinking of applying again really upsets me because I'll have to do it all over again and getting another academic reference would be hard considering I'm not in school right now. But I still want to go... 🙁 All I can think is that because this is a career change move for me and I graduated from undergrad in 2006, maybe I'm not as desirable? But I thought that they'd want to have more of a diverse class coming from all kinds of backgrounds. I am thinking of e-mailing Amy Lamb to ask her what my chances really are. I wonder how many people are even on the waitlist. If they have us at 18 and 20 then they must have had past experiences with that many people moving up, you think?

I asked the advisor what score of GRE they considered for acceptance and she told me it should be around 301-302. Honestly I think I got waitlisted just coz of that and maybe my essay was poor. But you know my GPA is 4.0 and I have a bachelors and masters degree from India. I also thought I had a very good chance considering that's its not even a year i have moved here and I was able to complete all my prereq and the volunteer hours. It was crazy but still I completed it before the deadline just in hope of starting a career in this country as soon as possible. But I am so dissapointed now 🙁

However, I think I will meet the advisor just to know the exact reason where did I lost. I think it would be helpful in my future applications. I would recommend you also to meet her and not loose hope. There are many more universities my dear.

By the way I have accepted the waitlist position... Don't ever let go 🙂

Good, because I know we've at least moved up one position now. Really I think it is kind of crappy that that is the new GRE threshold - if they changed the requirements, they should have told everyone that. I still have all of my notes written BY Sharon when I met with her in April 2012 when she said around 297 combined and 4 on writing. If they were changing that then I think they should have communicated it with everyone who was applying. They seem to have really changed things around this year and I don't like it.

I also thought that I would look good because I have been working full time while I completed all of my pre-reqs and volunteer time which I could only do on the weekends! When you spoke to Sharon, did she give you any indication that there was a chance to move up the waitlist enough to be offered a spot? I won't give up... But I don't want to be sad either. Unfortunately I can't really apply anywhere else without taking even MORE pre-reqs. I'm not in a position to relocate, either. I had a dream the other night that I went to GVSU for OT (which was my original plan 7 years ago - I got my bachelor's from GVSU) so I looked into their program yesterday, in case I did relocate to Grand Rapids again, and you can only have taken pre-reqs from an institution where you received a degree, so my EMU and WCC courses would mean nothing. It's so much work and I focused all my energy on EMU requirements so I really, really want it to work out. 🙁 Blah! Best of luck... Did you by chance take Med Term at WCC last fall? Your story about your degrees from India and moving here sounds familiar and I feel like we may have talked before? Maybe not though! 🙂

Yes I know it was 297 but that was for last year. She had said that it cud go up this year and unfortunately it did.

Its hats off to you that you worked full time and completed the pre reqs. I only studied once I came here last year in DEC. Anyways I am still taking classes at OCC for Wayne State and Grand Valley.I have taken all my pre req from OCC except the neuroanatomy from MSU. If you work, then Grand Valley is best for you as they have this Hybrid program. I think all your pre reqs can be transferred so nothing can go waste. You could just schedule a visit there and look.

In the email form Sharon, she suggested that I should wait what happens with the waitlist and then schedule a meeting where she could tell me my flaws in the application.

Hey that's great... I just e-mailed GVSU to inquire, but I couldn't apply til next year because there are still pre-reqs I'd have to take. Unless I can take those after I apply but I don't know... Ugh. Do you think I could call the OT department at EMU to inquire about my waitlist position now that it's been almost a week or is that not cool? I don't know how any of it works.

Dear they will start notifying those who are in the waitlist from 1st Nov. So i suggest just wait and see what happens. Its good to be positive but don't get very hopeful. I know it hurts really bad when things do not work out. I am right now just thinking about other universities or other courses in which i could apply. Then if there's a miracle thats going to happen.. (ha ha ha 🙂 ) then i will get some news in Nov. I wish the same for you 🙂

hello CMS22
Did you inquire about your waitlist position??

I don't know am getting a feeling that I should ask what's going on with the waitlist...
