Hey everyone, I have a bit of an odd question about the EC section of the AMCAS.

When describing volunteering in a third world country health clinic, should I describe the tasks that I did, even though most of the things that I did wouldnt be allowed in the U.S. For example suture removal/applicaiton, vaccinations, minor diagnosing, dispensing medications etc... I did them bc the the place is perpetually understaffed and bc other non qualified natives were also doing the same thing.

As always, your thoughts are appreciated!

I remember someone on this forum (I think a medical student) saying that this is a big no-no. I also think that you should avoid mentioning it. You have no medical qualifications so it might not sit well with the adcomms.

I was actually leaning towards this decision of not mentioning anything.. Any other thoughts out there?

I am just applying this cycle, and dont know anyone on an adcomm so this is purely my opinion, but maybe mention the smaller things you did like suture removals and vaccinations and stuff because those things can be taught pretty easily, but I would leave out the diagnosing and stuff, it might make the adcomm members think you have an ego and that you think you already know everything. I wouldn't think that the fact that it isn't alright to do in the US would make too much of a difference, rules are different in different countries. I would just not want to come off as "I am better than everyone else and know more because I got to do stuff no one else gets to do". Also, if you don't have a description for the activity, it might seem like you are trying to hide something. That seems like fun though! I'm jealous 😛
