Three weeks ago I sent in my application to ECFMG to sit the USMLE Step 1 exam in Dec of this year. Today, I received a letter from them stating that my application was rejected. I'm so confused as to why....

In their rules of eligibility it is states that, the medical student must have finished 2 years of Basic Science (i.e. MBBS I & II) before the first day of the chosen eligibility period. I requested the eligibility period -- Dec, Jan, Feb; b/c we finish up the year on Nov 14th - clearly before the first day of my eligibility period.

My only wonder is whether I need to have my results back, i.e. passing scores in order to 'complete' 2nd year and there be eligible to sit the exam. And since scores don't come back until early Dec - maybe that's considered 'falling within the eligibility period'.

If anyone could help me out on this issue, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks
M

Hi, you probably have this sorted out by now, but if not (or for anyone else in this situation), it helps to call ECFMG and ask why--I had the same thing happen to me, and when I called them, it turns out my application was rejected because I had mis-typed my date of birth on the ECFMG on-line registration, and it didn't match the DOB on my USMLE app! Anyway, you should also have got a letter in the mail a couple of weeks later saying why it was rejected--but call first, it's quicker.
