Why are you comparing medicine to volunteering?

Transporting hospital food/transporting patients/"organizing" a blood drive/other pointless crap vs identifying diseases/drawing up treatment plans/performing surgery/reading MRIs/other interesting things.

They're completely different.

Not really. The academic/mental aspect may be different but both require selflessness and sacrifice. If you hate volunteering you may find you hate medicine once there.

Touche, my friend! I meant that I didn't know anyone who was at UNC while I was there who would have done research if they didn't think they had to, but I guess that's what I get for wording things poorly.

Wow nice how do you like it so far? I currently go to UCI for undergrad. If you don't mind me asking, where did u go for undergrad and what was your gpa and mcat; and do you know what "type" of people they prefer for their med school?

sorry i'm not trying to be rude but i dont want to derail the thread and all that info is in my mdapps (right below my username). I do like it so far, but even if i didnt it would be irrelevant since i have 13 weeks of rotations left before i graduate. As far as type i like to think uci does a decent job of picking passionate people and weeding out the checklist premeds (which i've been on a soap box about throughout this thread). We are a pretty involved student body but then, i have nothing to compare it to. You are welcome to pm me if you have other questions.
