How important is it that your EC's (aside from research and shadowing), be somewhat related to the field of sciences? If you only really have one EC related to sciences, and the rest are more artsy and performance based, does that hurt you?
Research is elective; only 60% list it on their application. it need not be science related at all.
Shadowing is expected by most, but not all adcomms. The essential EC is clinical experience where you are actively interacting with patients in a volunteer, employment, or clinical research setting. You would ideally do this on a weekly basis for at least a year, better for a year and a half or more.
If your clinical experience is not gained in a volunteer setting, you'll need some community service. This is a fairly universal expectation also. Again, it need not be medically-related.
Having artsy and performance based ECs is fine. Variety will help you stand out. But they won't get you anywhere whout the minimum "expected" but unwritten requirements I've mentioned. Leadership and teaching are other areas that are desirable but not required to get into med school.
