So I read not to buy the EK 1001 version of bio, but that was a few years ago, I'm wondering if they've updated it to a good version and if not what's bad about the edition?

i thought it was good. it broke it down like the real MCAT as in passages and discretes. I think it is a good buy.

i think its a good buy just to get practice. you need to know your material cold. it helps you retain information, learn new facts that aren't covered in EK's lectures, and helps you work on timing. i'd say most questions even within the passages feel like discretes (like 80%, but there are a few that make you really integrate what's in the passage).
overall, i'd say for $25 its quite worth it.
