Im currently a junior in the Electrical Engineering program. My overall gpa is 3.6 . I am currently catching up on the rest of my chemistry during the summers maybe in fall/spring. What are my chances into getting into a medical school with atleast a 30 on MCAT. Lets consider that i finish with a 3.4-3.6. Ohh dont know how much of difference this would make but i got a D in General Chem 1( was out of high school, thought i could half ass everthing) but i retook it and got an A.

Thanks for any replies

If your extracurriculars and medical experiences are good, you have a good chance. Your numbers are near mine, and I was an engineering major.

Try to keep your GPA at 3.6 or higher (3.66 being the mean acceptee GPA) to give yourself the best chance. If your MCAT is 30, your chances depend on what state you're from. If from CA, you're unlikely to get into a state school. If from Illinois, you'd have a good chance. If your GPA is 3.4, I'd suggest you consider delaying graduation and continue to raise the GPA to competitive levels, unless you get a great MCAT score.

Don't worry about the D in Chem, as you retook and completely redeemed it.

i think that being an engineering major is probably a leg up in itself.

I've been an EE for a long time, and am finally starting med school this fall. My GPA wasn't great either, but a 3.5 in EE is much harder to get than a 4.0 in most pre-med majors. AdCom's generally take this into account.

If you are a competent EE and study, you should have no problem scoring in the 30's on the MCAT. Don't take it until you are ready though- your goal should be to be prepared and only take it once. If you want to know what score you will get if you take it, I found the AMCAS practice tests to be far more reliable than the Kaplan tests for predicting a score. The electrical questions that are generally considered to be difficult are very easy if you majored in EE. Same thing for most of the physics questions.

If you are just now starting the process, keep in mind that it takes a long time to prepare/apply, so talk to an advisor to see when it's practical to apply. If you will end up with a year off after you graduate, consider picking up an MS-- it will boost your GPA, and it will give you research experience, which is a big deal at some schools (and gives you something technical to talk about in interviews.)

He'll probably save a lot of headache.

However, I'm not so sure nursing pays more than EE...

as far as I know nursing brings in around 60K, that's lower than the starting salary for an EE with a masters

but maybe I'm just underestimating the income potential of nursing?

I've heard things like $90,000 for nurses in California (on SDN), but who knows how many years in that is, or if it's even true.

That's about my mom's salary for 5 years in at Kaiser (it's actually calculated hourly), although you have to have some (~2 years) experience before a big hospital will take you. You can also work a part-time job which pays about half as much, on top of that.

However, a fresh-grad nurse will get about $70,000/year compared to engineers which will get paid the same... but don't have to wipe butts.
