electron configuration s orbital exceptions question

so only if the d orbital can be half full or full will electrons be taken from the s orbital.

but what if for say V where being half full D would mean completely emptying the s orbital.
does this happen or no? i dont think it does but not sure.

also when you are taking away electrons for say Co2+ do you lose the electrons from the s orbital or do you lose 2 from the d orbital to make it half full??

For the transitions metals, you always lose electrons from the s orbital that has a higher n number than the d orbital. Specifically, electrons are always lost from 4s before 3d.

Filling electrons is different and you would just use that orbital diagram trick that I'm sure you've seen before.
