which specialty gives you better training for "disaster preparedness" or plane crashes, etc.

if i were to break my arm in half during a hike or get bit by a shark, which type of training would prepare me for this? thx.

Neither of the above would prepare you....

I would recommend Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training to prepare you for what you describe.

Haha, great answer!

Both fields are totally different and it's not really productive to compare them for management of pre-hospital patients.

Anesthesiology is more about securing airways, performing procedures (LP's, access, epidurals, etc.), monitoring patients in the OR, and performing critical care management of patients in the units (if you've completed a fellowship).

Emergency medicine is more about initial workups, procedures, and performing critical care management of patients in the initial phase. Also important is dispo, dispo, dispo (who can ignore that fact in EM?).

Having said that, any physicians -- including pediatricians, PM&R, psychiatrists, etc. -- can take advanced trauma life support to learn how to deal with trauma patients.

i guess i picked some extreme examples...

what about if you and some buddies are out eating and one of them starts choking...

what if your brother has a heart attack at a family get-together

what if your son cuts his leg open..

these are the types of things i'm asking about. thx.

Paramedics should be able to handle any of that.
