EM residencies for DO's

Any good DO residencies out there? if so what complex scores provide a decent chance to get in? What about EM allopathic residencies? What does a DO have to get on the USMLE to make himself/herself competative?

St. Barnabas in Bronx, NY is not only the busiest DO EM program in the country, but also the largest taking about 12 per year. People with 90 on the COMLEX have gone there.

I'm just curious. Is a 90 on the COMLEX a "good" score? I have no idea how the COMLEX is scored, therefore I have no idea what a 90 is equivalent to! Could you please claify this for me? Thanks.

Well it is pretty difficult to say a 90 on the COMLEX = 220 on the USMLE...they are different tests of different lengths. I myself scored much better on the COMLEX than the USMLE and the opposite happened to 2 of my friends...

As for residencies in EM there have been numerous posts regarding this. Allopathic residencies are by far the more competative and have the better applicants. Classes are larger and teaching comes from board certified EM docs. It is far more strictly regulated by the Residency Review Committee, requiring research/academic project, strict lecture requirements per week and numerous other requirements. It is difficult to go wrong with any of the allopathic programs...and quite honestly, if you want to go DO ONLY, then choose a dually accredited program.
I for one, am going allopathic as are at least 4 other of my friends entering EM.
Also, do NOT choose the EM/FP stuff that some DO programs offer...you are putting yourself at jeopardy with such a program.

Out of curiosity and because I vaguely considered it an option at one time, why do you think that FP/EM combo offered by some of the osteopathic programs is risky?

Just curious, I am a 3rd year DO student applying to MD residencies (pretty sure) this summer... what MD residencies are known to be DO friendly? I have been perusing the various websites and have a short list, but am not sure if the DOs in their program are really first years or did their AOA internship year and are now first years there...

What I am currently doing is contacting graduates of my medschool who are currently in EM Residency. I am finding this the most help (along with SDN, of course 😛 ) -- talking to people who are actually in the thick of things at hospitals that I'm interested in (I originally got a list of programs from my EM Club here and the "usual" websites). From the list of programs, I looked up how many DO Residents in EM they do, and have, had (I'm not looking to be a trail-blazer at a hospital that has never accepted a DO in the last 5-10 yrs). The hospitals that our graduates are in (all allopathic, BTW, with DO's and MD's splitting the total spots fairly equally) are very "DO friendly" -- they know our school's rep of producing quality graduates, and fully accept COMLEX as a "valid" exam (geez, I hate to type that) to evaluate DO candidates. They also expect the 1-yr internship before entering their programs (understandable since that is a part of DO licensure in the state I'm going to school in (PA)...this is different from NY where we do not have this requirement). One Resident told me that, yes, it is competitive at this point, but it still comes down to: Do they think they can put up with you for the next 3 yrs? <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Every allopathic program has dropped its FP/EM track and will likely drop the EM/IM track in the near future... there simply is no reason for them! ACEP, AAEM and SAEM has pushed for only BC/EM trained docs in the ED, and as a seperate profession, there is no way a FP/EM resident could get enough consistant training in either field to be properly trained and then certified. The days when you could be a FP and then "work in the ED for xtra cash" are going the way of the DoDo.
Perhaps "risky" in the sense that Dept. Heads just don't trust the FP/EM format. Since (honestly) the allopathic residency format is considered the "gold standard" and the FP/EM is gone from MD GME.

DO friendly? I looked at every program that I was interested in, and checked to see if a DO was a resident there.
