I really like EMORY, but I somehow feel weird turning down the Georgetown name/reputation. In terms of preparation for future, which school is superior?

Go to Emory if you really like it. A name isn't going to make you a happy medical student. Your gut instinct is good gauge.

Emory is far superior.

Wait, how will you be turning down Georgetown's prestige for Emory?

if you're just concerned about rep, emory's more prestigious than georgetown, by a long shot.

I dunno. I liked both schools.
But Georgetown's board scores, residency placements were much more impressive. Downside is its price. I think its a under-rated school which is why many might say that Emory is more prestigious.
Can't go wrong with either.

I think Gtowns great match comes from the fact that they work their students very hard, esp during 3rd yr training so by the time you graduate youre completely confident in your ability to function as a physician...and Im sure most residency directors know this about gtown which is why they regard it so highly. On the downside, gtowns hospital leaves lots to be desired, their actual medical school facilities are ancient, research opportunities arent so great, cost of living is ridic, and in my opinion the student body could stand to be much more diverse. If youre looking at reputation alone, Emorys beats gtown hands down, but I think both schools will provide great clinical training. I think your choice comes down to what you want location-wise. Also if you want to participate heavily in research, definitely go with Emory.

If you really like Emory, go there because it has a better rep than Georgetown.

Gtown residency director rating: 3.4
Emory: 4.0

Gtown's residency director rating is actually a bit below its peer schools like BU and Tufts. While your mechanic is probably more likely to know Georgetown than Emory, in terms of medical prestige I think Emory is a top 20 school and Georgetown is clearly not. Not that that makes it horrible or anything, but it makes the "I like Emory but Georgetown's reputation!" thing ridiculous.

I think it is arguable whether Emory is a top 20 school, but I do agree that Georgetown probably isn't.
However, I would disregard "residency ratings" because they are arbitrary, from US News, and depend on what hospital you work in (I would think it would be harder to get higher ratings if you are at a top 50 hospital since standards and the providers that come through there are exceptional).

I think that match list and board scores are the most concrete way to compare success after medical school. Georgetown places a ridiculous number of students into top 50 hospitals and tough specialties. Emory's is good, but clearly not as great a Georgetown.

That being said I think Georgetown has obvious downsides. Price, price, price and workaholics during clerkship years.

Match lists and residency placements are FAR more useless than US News residency director rankings. At least US News is an even gauge. Just think for a few moments and you'll figure out why match lists are completely and utterly useless unless the schools are in similar geographical locations or are outputing students that all want to do the same stuff.

That, and there is no such thing as "residency rankings" so gauging a match list is completely futile right from the start.

So what's Georgetown's average board score then? Oh, "consistently above average" or "well above average"? Every fricking school in the country says this and it's meaningless.

Match lists are even worse. Not only are they completely dependant on the interests of the class, geography and other irrelevant factors, but we don't even know how to evaluate them, let alone compile them all together and evaluate which school is better. Quick, who's better in ophtho, Bascom Palmer or MGH?

Residency director ratings are not ideal, but they are far better than the alternative at evaluating the only thing that counts ... what residency directors think of the school. No objective metric (funding, avg GPA, avg MCAT, avg residency director rating, avg peer rating, etc) puts Georgetown on the same level as Emory, let alone above it.

And for the record I'm not an Emory troll either, I'm probably going to decline to go there. I just hate when people say "look at their match list!". 😛

I don't know much about gtown so I can't compare the two schools. I am a second year at Emory so if you have any question just pm me. My advice will be go to school that fits you best, where you can see yourself being happy. Reputation, scores, prestige, etc is important but you need to be at where you feel most comfortable in. Most med schools will teach you the things you need to know. You can succeed and get any residency you want coming from any med school. It is just up to you.
