Hi guys! These are my two favorite schools so far that I’ve been accepted into… I’ve been going back and forth for what feels like AGES trying to decide on which one would be the best decision for me, and I’m running out of time to decide. Any advice? Here’s my pros/cons list:
Emory
Pros:
o Costs about the same as UIndy (31.2K tuition/year)
o Reputable (ranked 7th in country, recognizable name)
o Excellent research opportunities with creative control
o Diverse student body
o Warm climate
o Nice area surrounding school
o Very pretty campus, nice classrooms
o I like values of school (liberal studies emphasis, interpersonal communications, etc.)
o Collaboration with students in other medical professions (only 2 days though? lacking info here)
o Good student/faculty ratio
o Faculty are specialists in the classes they teach
o Lots of electives
o Good vibe - students came across as sharp
o High tech facilities
o Good clinical experience (36 weeks, start in second year)
Cons:
o Traffic, huge city (and I grew up in a town with about 22K people, so this is HUGE to me - but admittedly, the idea of living in a big city is kinda neat, too)
o Higher cost of living
o Large class size
o MUST do research your final year – not sure how I feel about that
o Farthest away from family
o Very front-heavy with course load
o Lots of credit hours of work – extra semester of school, must start in summer
UIndy
Pros:
o Costs about the same as Emory (33.4K/year for tuition only)
o Smaller city size and less traffic is appealing
o Lower cost of living
o Smaller class size
o Very reputable in Indiana
o Good student-faculty ratio
o Excellent clinical experience with 39 weeks total – get you started right away in first year
o All faculty are practicing PTs
o Research not required
o Good vibe, and students seemed sharp
o Really liked faculty and staff I met during interview day - made me feel comfortable
o Students gushed about how much they loved their profs
o New large on-campus science facility being built NOW
o Semesters seemed balanced in terms of course load (not front-heavy for example)
o Close to home
Cons:
o Religious school – but not a big deal, because they don't seem to force it
o Not in good area of city, so probably longer commute
o No creative control with research (but research is only optional)
o No electives
o Facilities not that impressive
o Cold climate
Again, any advice would be greatly appreciated! Emory has so much to offer, but so does UIndy. So much to consider...
