What's the best way to end the interview? In other words, as you're standing up to leave, what are your parting words to the interviewer? It always seems a little awkward and I'm never sure quite what to say that doesn't sound trite or obvious. Any thoughts?

Thank them for taking the time to interview you and say you look forward to hearing back from the school.

Thanks for the response, but I guess that's what I consider sounding a little trite and obvious. Thanking the interviewer for his/her time goes without saying, and you know that you will hear back from them - even if it's a waitlist/rejection letter. I guess I'm trying to come up with something that has a little more punch - something that leaves a favorable final impression in the interviewer's mind.

Would it be inappropriate to give a kind of a verbal letter of intent? For example, "ABC is my number one choice for med school - this is where I want to spend the next four years." Or should I save that line for a written letter of intent?

Or maybe you should save it for your actual number one choice...

I did tell my interviewer at Baylor College of Medicine that is was my #1 (and am currently sitting on an acceptance). I'm with you that it's normally kind of awkward. I always end on another handshake, thank them for their time. It gets awkward though when they escort you somehwere next becuase you say goodbye like 3 times...

a hug and a kiss. french if the interviewee is into it...oh ya

Seriously, I dont think its wrong to tell one school how it's your top choice, especially thoughout the interview you were energetic and happy. But to all of sudden say it to end the interview...might seem forced and awkward.

Again, everything depends on your personality and especially the interviewee's....you just gotta have a feel for it 😀

Well, the interview IS at my actual number one choice so I guess I'll throw something like that in at the end.

By the way, great stats. If I had your numbers I wouldn't worry too much about what I said at the end of the interview. 🙂

I try to end interviews with a high five. If your interviewer reciprocates, CONGRATULATIONS, you've done it; you're in!

Yeah, definitely tell them if it is. I was at Emory 2 weeks ago, and on multiple occasions they kept telling us to tell them if Emory was our number one choice (I obviously couldn't in good faith), because it apparently does have an effect there (schools always want a good acceptance:matric ratio)

I always ask my interviewers if I can get more shadowing experience by following them around for a few days. 😎

I was actually thinking about the jumping chest bump (ala NFL players), but thought it might be considered lacking in proper decorum for the situation. 🙂

So, ya doing anything tonight? *wink*

I'll wind up back at this school... one way... or another. *thousand yard stare*

Or you could just jump up on the desk and do your Interview Went Well Dance [clothing optional]

Or maybe ... "We'll meet again ... one way or another ... trust me ... we'll meet again ... Do you live around here?"
