Could someone please help me understand what entitlements are provided after an overseas tour, or a reference to find this stuff out? I was recently informed that I would be entitled to 30 days of leave between my losing command overseas and reporting to the gaining command. I was also informed of a 15 day period in between for outprocessing in addition to the 30 days.
I was also told there is a new ribbon I can wear once I leave the OCONUS assignment? Is there anything else I would be entitled to?

d. Overseas Service Ribbon (OSR) The OSR may be awarded to all members of the Active Component and members of the Reserve Component in an active Reserve status, who are credited with a normal overseas tour (see AR 600-8- 22, para 5-4c; AR 614-30, table 3-2). www.armyg1.army.mil/militarypersonnel/ppg.asp

It may be awarded? I thought it was just something you got automatically after like 9 mo or something overseas

That's if they are TCS/TDY. Otherwise you need to have completed the tour.

yeah, i had a NLT report date to a CONUS assignment that was something like 2 weeks after the end of an OCONUS assignment. you get to take as much leave as your orders permit, assuming you have the leave to burn. there is no magic number of 30 days or otherwise.

also, pTDY for house hunting can be granted by either the losing or accepting command, but not both. keywords: can be. it's not an entitlement written into your orders; it's at the commander's discretion. most people will use it after signing into the new assignment, particularly if you're coming from OCONUS. but we routinely used to have people from my program use the pTDY near the end of residency for house hunting in conjunction with TDY because we had to go CONUS for boards anyway.

Well, I didn't mean the 30 days as, "free leave", but I was told the ability to take the 30 days after an OCONUS assignment is an entitlement and should be reflected in one's report date.

Yeah, I doubt this is true in the sense that they're obligated to do it by an AR. Again, I got two weeks when going from OCONUS to CONUS. Other people from my residency program, both my year and otherwise, got more like a month or 6 weeks. I'm pretty sure it depends on a lot of things like how desperate the accepting command is and how generous the consultant/HRC is willing/able to be.

My last two PCS moves (not involving OCONUS moves), credentialing at my new command was so dysfunctional and slow that it was 2-3 weeks before I was allowed to actually work. I had a few wasted days of command orientation and the like, but the rest were just show up, nope still not credentialed, go home, goof off.

I don't think I'll ever waste leave associated with a PCS move again. There's enough friction and inefficiency in the system that I'll get a ton of time off regardless. The only downside is no travel.
