Hi everyone!
I'm starting to set up externships for my clinical year, and since I'd like to do an equine internship I need to do them at equine hospitals. Unfortunately I have very limited externship time because of our rotation schedule, so I'm really hoping to pick one that I'll have a great experience at so I have somewhere I like that I can apply for internships.
I'd be very grateful whatever recommendations/input anyone can offer-- where people have had good experiences as well as recommendations of where to avoid. I've been to one of the very large practices and have found I'd actually prefer a smaller, 4-8 doctor hospital/ambulatory practice. Preferable would be on the East coast/KY/TN/VA/Carolina's area, equine only or equine + small animal hospital and ambulatory, ideally with at least one doctor who has an interest in chiropractics/acupuncture.
Again, any input is much appreciated! Thanks : )

I did the East Coast tour in vet school. Blue Ridge and Woodside in VA were excellent. PM me if you want more info.

I had a friend in vet school (who ended up doing an equine internship after vet school - I think the internship was at University of Minnesota if memory serves) that did an externship at Rood and Riddle - she absolutely loved it there.

Edit: located in Kentucky 🙂

OT (sort of) Question: What kind of considerations do you need to make when looking at a private practice or academic internship?

Hi TrueBlue!

You didn't include in your post places that you've already considered, so forgive me if I'm repeating what you already know. Unionville Equine Associates (www.ueavet.com) fits most of your critieria:

East Coast (Southeast PA)
8 vet practice
Small hospital with elective surgery, majority of caseload is ambulatory, 100% equine
An alternative medicine vet that does lots of chiro/acupuncture!

As one of the associate vets at UEA, yes, I'm biased. :soexcited:We've had excellent feedback from externs and many of them chose to return. The internship program is new, and we definitely prefer to have had a prospective intern come visit us in the form of an externship.

There are lots of excellent East Coast equine externships, like shortnsweet mentioned. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask or email for more information.

OT (sort of) Question: What kind of considerations do you need to make when looking at a private practice or academic internship?

It needs to be about you and your goals. Do you want to go on to a residency? Work at a university? Be an ambulatory vet? Do you enjoy teaching students?

I did all of my externships at private practices with the full intention of becoming a GP in a private practice. Only in my final year of vet school did I realize how much I enjoy academia, teaching students, and want to specialize in internal medicine. I wouldn't trade any of my externships in though, because learning about first opinion practice has been invaluable to my internship. I can better understand referrals and learned so much about things you see in the field.

I'm a little late to the game, but I'm doing my internship at Rood and Riddle in Saratoga. If you contact the practice, you can schedule an externship with us. We even have an apartment above the barn that you can stay in (as long as we don't have any visiting vets). If you want to be there during a busy season, schedule during the spring or during the track season in the summer (mid-July to September).
