What you do in your personal statement is totally a matter of style. In the end it comes down to your own style.
That being said, I would refrain from using unexplained scientific jargon in your essays. Keep it simple. The fact that you can break your research down shows that you understand what is going on. Sometimes you will be asked at interviews to explain your research as you would to a child, so that a child could understand. It's that same sort of exercize. Besides, reviewers read quickly or skim through every personal statement. I can't imagine that a reviewer would actually look up any reference you put in there. Personally, I think it would be kind of tacky as well, but I don't know how others would feel about it.
