EssayEdge can be quite expensive, however, they have some good editors that can really polish your essays. It is worth it for your personal statement.

I'd suggest getting your school's Writing Center to do a first pass on grammar, and to have friends/colleagues etc. also make their comments before sending it to essay edge.

ask some english/lit-major friends, ask your school's writing help department (if you have one), ask an old english/lit teacher maybe, ask someone who's written a PS to medical school before.

EssayEdge can really do a bang-up job on your essays, but make sure you request an editor who has experience w/ med school essays, just in case. You can even request a med student editor, although I don't think it's necessary.

You certainly won't need the editing service if you're already a good writer, but it can make a huge diff for mediocre/average writers.

Disclaimer: I may be biased as I have worked for EssayEdge, but I really think the service is worth the money for most of the people who use it.

In a couple of months, in preparation for the next cycle of AMCAS submissions, a thread is usually started with people volunteering to read Personal Statements. Last year I got some really great commentary and perspective from several SDNer's, so you may want to take advantage of this and save the money for applications.

I used EssayEdge for my college personal statements and was very disappointed. Their revision consisted of inserting a couple of cliches.

Really good advice.

I've sent one essay to Essayedge (college essay for the common app) and I don't regret it simply because it was an important essay and it was worth a try. However, the e-mail I got pretty much told me that my essay was great and it just required some polishing. He simply re-arranged some sentences and put in some arbitrary words which (in my opinion) detracted from the flow of the selected sentences.

In fact, he even suggested that I apply for a position at the service. It was flattering for sure, but that's not the answer I really wanted to hear when I got my essay back.

However, I have a good friend who has a lot of trouble with essay writing and he attributes his personal statement to helping him get into a good college. (He used essayedge).

To put it simply, essayedge is good for people who have trouble writing or feel they are not the best writers. Going to your local writing center will help you with syntax, form and grammar. In my opinion, talking to an upper-level english professor will probably give you more insight concerning essay improvements than essayedge. However, if, after all this, you still don't feel confident about your essay, go ahead and send it in. It'll probably be expensive but your personal statement is pretty damn important.

i used essayedge for both college and med school essays and found it to be quite helpful both times - i think i went for the cheapest option both times. i consider myself (and have been told by others) that i'm a very strong writer, but i still found their editing and critiques to be very useful. there's a section when you submit your essay to give directions or pose questions to your editor. for the med school essay, i gave her a list of things to look for while reading - does it convey succinctly why i want to be a doctor, etc. i really would reccomend it.

I was considering using it, but ended up going to my school's writing center where I met with my editor 4 different times until I got my personal statement to be as good as I wanted it. I liked the fact that I could talk to somebody in person about it, because a lot of good ideas came just from discussing things in my essay. I would definitely recommend checking out the writing center at your school (or maybe an english professor if there is no writing center) regardless of whether you use essayedge or not.

Great advice. I was an older non-traditional and I did my pre-reqs in schools that had nothing even resembling any help for medical school applicants. I think I'm an excellent writer and I expected EssayEdge to tear up my essay in order to make me feel that I'd gotten my money's worth.

Nothing of the sort happened. They complimented my writing and my personal statement - but they caught little flaws that I knew were in my writing, like resorting to passive voice a little too often. When the process was done, the writing was my voice and my style - but much more "polished" than what I had originally written.

Worth every penny, in my opinion.

Is it possible however that they use your PS and ideas for other students???

OK, I'll bite, even though this quite silly. EssayEdge is an editing service - your ideas are your problem (as well as your moral obligation, BTW) - they're there to help you to edit your writing. They don't give out essay topics. Believe it or not, most adcoms have been in the business for a while, and if your essay doesn't look genuine, you're pretty much cooked. Plus, if your personal statement is as personal as it should be (in my opinion), nobody else could use it if they wanted to.
