Don't waste your money on any of those services. Get your friends/profs/docs/etc. to read it and you'll be fine.

There's a thread somewhere around here with people who were recently accepted to medical schools who are willing to read and edit your essays for free. They may not be the best, but hey they were good enough to get into med school and they'll do you a free service. Consider them first.

I do not know if there is anything better b/c this is really the only essay service I know of. A friend of mine used it and was generally pleased with their experience. The answer to your question is to compare your potential losses with your potential gains. Essayedge is for you if you just can't seem to get started, you've never been a great writer, you don't have five or six other people who are willing or able to help you out with this, and especially if you are going to lose another 2 months and wind up going to them anyway. It's nice to have students here on SDN that are willing to help but keep in mind that these people likely had many things going for them besides the PS. So an acceptance does not necessitate a stellar personal statement. I am not saying some of them might not be damn good editors but at essayedge you are getting professionals. These people do this stuff for a living. They have seen a million of these and they know what they are doing. More importantly you are paying them so they are guaranteed to get things done on your time schedule (or really close to it). You can't expect/demand quick help when it's free. I'm guessing price is not really a problem for you or you would not be considering it. Maybe you should ask yourself "why shouldn't I use the service??"

Does your school have a writing center or anything...? You might look into that if you'd prefer a money-saving route.

Are there any good services to use for secondaries. With the sheer numbers of essays, it is unrealistic to think that the same people will want to read about 50 essays of yours. This is why I am considering an online, paid service. Suggestions, thoughts?

I used EssayEdge once and I'd say that, overall, it's really not that impressive.

Granted, I had already edited my essay quite a bit. The most that I got from the critique was a few shortened clauses and a few esoteric vocab. words placed in random places.

It was actually a pretty funny story. I usually do well on essays, but I thought my essays weren't that great. Then the guy from essayedge e-mails me with minimal corrections and says I'm a great writer...oh well, I guess if they don't edit your essay, the money is worth the uplifting comment. :D

Overall, I would say this: you know if you're a good writer. If you are a good writer, just write like you usually would and get it critiqued by teachers/writing center. However, if you struggle with writing, essayedge is great for editing your FIRST draft (no point in doing editing for them if you're already paying).

Anyway, that's my $0.02.

I was really hesitant to use this service at first...but if I had to do it again, I would. My editor was amazing, he had a comment for every change he made and made suggestions for new directions I should look at. He also was very supportive (even uplifting) when discussing your good stuff...but sensitive (yet blunt) when discussing the bad. Overall, it made my essay absolutely polished. It turned a good essay, into a perfect essay.

They really do know what they are doing.

BTW I used the Grand Service.

I would recommend EssayEdge without hesitation. I think I'm a pretty good writer and I decided in advance that if EssayEdge "hacked-up" my essay I would just stick with what I had originally written. That isn't what happened - they re-arranged the order of two paragraphs for clarity, parsed a couple of my overly-long sentences, and corrected my tendency to drop into passive voice too often. The result was 100% my voice and my style of writing - just improved. My EssayEdge reviewer (an Ivy league graduate student in English) just worked with what I had written - my "peer" reviewers all wanted, to some degree, to put their own "stamp" on my writing and I didn't want that. I did not ask EssayEdge for any help with content and I don't think that's a good idea - adcoms do not expect you to be a professional writer and they do want to see your own work. But, for "final polishing" I felt that my money was well-spent and I would do it again.
