djsahand said:in the kaplan book it says anything with a Carbonyl is withdrawing (meta director), but in one of the practice tests is that the ester is electron donating (ortho/para).
which is right?
thanks guys

QofQuimica said:It depends on how the ester is connected to the ring. If the carbonyl is directly attached to the ring, it will be a meta-director. But if you have the oxygen attached to the ring (i.e., an acetylated phenol), it will be ortho/para directing.
dat_student said:also depends on the rxn type, In one rxn, a compound may be electron withdrawing and in another reaction that same compound may be electron donating and vice versa...
Would you explain what you mean or maybe give an example?QofQuimica said:lol, I'm sorry, but although your posts are in perfectly grammatical English, I can't make any sense of them.Would you explain what you mean or maybe give an example?

dat_student said:which part of my explanation is not clear to you? 😉 I can try another language too![]()
And I'd say that you have a great future in writing political speeches if you change your mind about dental school. 😉 😛 Did you check out the subforum? What do you think?QofQuimica said:Did you check out the subforum? What do you think?

dat_student said:Seriously, I've already tried biology, astrophysics, chemistry, computer science etc. I've done a little bit of everything in science. I won't mind adding "political science" to the list. I am interested in anything that is directly or indirectly related to science.![]()
QofQuimica said:Hmm, you've barely scratched the surface of possibilities. What about philosophy of science? Christian science? Science fiction? Mad science? (Bwah hah hah hah.)

dat_student said:true, many possibilities. I'll be a science student forever.![]()
QofQuimica said:lol, don't worry, you'd have lots of company. Anyway, it's more fun to be a student than it is to have a job. 😛
I have had jobs too, all research and teaching jobs, no exceptions (i.e. excluding volunteer works). A student with my GPA shouldn't even be qualified as a teacher. Shame on them !
