in the kaplan book it says anything with a Carbonyl is withdrawing (meta director), but in one of the practice tests is that the ester is electron donating (ortho/para).

which is right?

depends on the context, they both can be right...Having said that, Kaplan has mistakes and they may be wrong in one of the two cases. Again, it depends on the context.

It depends on how the ester is connected to the ring. If the carbonyl is directly attached to the ring, it will be a meta-director. But if you have the oxygen attached to the ring (i.e., an acetylated phenol), it will be ortho/para directing.

also depends on the reaction type, In one reaction, a compound may be electron withdrawing and in another reaction that same compound may be electron donating and vice versa...

Seriously, I've already tried biology, astrophysics, chemistry, computer science etc. I've done a little bit of everything in science. I won't mind adding "political science" to the list. I am interested in anything that is directly or indirectly related to science.

...and it's more fun to have a job than it is to have a wife I have had jobs too, all research and teaching jobs, no exceptions (i.e. excluding volunteer works). A student with my GPA shouldn't even be qualified as a teacher. Shame on them !
