Do people knowledgable about the mcat recommend mixing in the study of medical and/or general etymology? Can answers be determined this alone, partially?

No, and no. You need to memorize things, just not word origins and roots. That would be a waste of time, as the MCAT doesn't expect you to know the definitions of uncommon words. You'll either be given an explicit definition or enough contextual information to define things unambiguously. There's a reason none of the MCAT prep materials spend one paragraph on etymology.
