EVMS Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi,

I want to send a letter of update to EVMS. can someone give me the contact information for the dean/director of admissions, or whoever i should contact? i think i was given a business card at my interview but i cant find it. please PM me with the info if you can, thanks so much!

You can get the address for the admissions department off of their website. I would use that address, and then add the name of whomever you want the letter to go to (Director or Dean as examples). Your materials will find their way into the correct hands (and then into your file).

Has anyone heard of any movement on the waitlist? Come on lets get going, I can't stand it. UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG😱

I have a feeling that this is going to be a really long summer. Move waitlist, move....give us some hope, please.

Hang in there!!! I was on the wait list last year (Top 1/3 OSS Male) and ran to the mailbox everyday. I finally received word in August that I was rejected. The spring and summer wait sucked and seemed to go on forever, I really wish I wouldn't have stressed so much over it after all my endless stressing out didn't help at all, but it did frustrate all of my friends and family.

It turned out to be a blessing, I have had a great year and got engaged, which very well might not have happened if I was accepted. This year I interviewed in Jan and was accepted the same month (thank goodness I didn't have to wait again). So keep your heads up and keep moving forward with life, good things might just happen.

May 15th seems to be a big day for wait lists all over the country. My humble advice would be, after that relax and enjoy the summer as much as possible and maybe think a little bit about getting applications ready as early as possible for next year. You know the old saying hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Good luck to all of those waiting I can definably feel your pain.

I agree with your post, but it's easier said then done. I think no matter what I would have told myself, I would have continued to stress until I received final word. Perhaps its just a right of passage in the process or something. I was on the EVMS waitlist from the beginning of October until the end of May this year. And I stressed about it as each and every day passed in between. Even moreso because I was in the middle third instead of the top.

But you know, there is definitely hope. I'm proof that one's rank does not really matter as much as you may think. The important thing is to stay in contact with them, demonstrate continuing interest in the school and committment to medicine, and don't give up hope until the end. It is a torturous process, but it is sooooo worth it. I suspect the entire process of becoming a Doctor will involve a transition from one type of stress to another all along the way. Some periods obviously will be tougher than others.

Is anyone familiar with the health insurance packages offered through EVMS? I'll be losing my coverage soon and hope it's possible to get a good deal through a school program. Any ideas?

Haemulon congrats on getting off the waitlist!! 🙂

As for me, I'll be moving down to Norfolk in July. So if anyone wants to spend some time hanging out/drinking/beaching I will totally be down.

We should definitely get some people together for some pre-term celebrating/relaxing. PM me as the time approaches and we can swap info 🙂
Same goes for the rest of my fellow classmates 👍

NOPE. I called to see if my position changed, but I'm still hanging in there in the middle 3rd :|

I called today...I'm still in the top third but OOS. The lady I talked to said there's nothing I can do but wait. 🙁 She also said May 15 will bring lots of movement, so we just have to sit tight for a few more days!

Hello Classmates!

I had a great time meeting all of you at the second look weekend. Just signed up for SDN since my life has become (temporarily) simpler. As of this coming sunday, I'm unemployed! :scared:

JoanofArc, you're right - the moustache is astounding! And the whole amygdala/AA "encounter group" was a hoot.

Were you in on the exploration of the potential living spaces above the lobby?

Anyway, I'll be in town most of the summer so count me in on the adventures.

hey everyone! this is my first time exploring this thread, and it's been the best procrastination tool ever! (which I clearly needed since my last undergrad final is tomorrow afternoon).

I had a great time at preview weekend -- JoanofArc, your "highlights" list had me laughing out loud (gotta love almost taking a taxi across the street ) -- and I was totally in on the "upstairs lobby apartments" hunt! (which I still haven't ruled out as a possibility....air mattresses aren't so bad...)

I'll probably be moving in (somewhere) on Aug 1st, and I definitely want to hang out with everyone before orientation! 🙂

Yay I'm excited! Now I'm going to study...I feel like this may be the last time I can put off studying until the night before an exam...

Waitlist ride not so much fun. Can we please get off!UUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGG:beat:

Hey! I posted last on Thursday, did everyone get in and forgot to tell me😕 Is anyone out there? Please don't say that I am the only one on the waitlist😱

Nope I'm still waitlisted. Nothing but silence from EVMS for me. Tomorrow is May 15 though!

[Glad I didn't miss something. Best of luck to ya🙂 quote=nabs86;5142338]Nope I'm still waitlisted. Nothing but silence from EVMS for me. Tomorrow is May 15 though!
I'm still waiting also!! You are right, this ride is rough!

I got accepted last week. I am ISS female. So, waiting list is moving.

 Way to go! Now please say its my turn🙂 Here we go😱 Please let me in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!quote=gotin;5143834]I got accepted last week. I am ISS female. So, waiting list is moving.
buffett,

also, did you ask them which 3rd you were in? mind telling us?

Boundthapn - Looks like we're waiting on the same waiting lists....hope we get in!!!!

Got a call from the Director of Admissions yesterday afternoon, and she said that I've been accepted (I'm an ISM - was originally in middle third). They're sending out the letter/packet today!

This is where I'm going baby! 🙂

Good luck to the rest of you, the list IS moving.

Some advice: Go see the Dean and send as many updates as possible. This will show your interest in the school.

Congratulations! Did everyone else who got accepted get a call from the director of admissions, or just the packet in the mail?

I got a call as well. She was really nice. I am an in state male (is that what ISM means?). I interviewed back in september and have been in the top third since. I think that the last I checked was march and i had been in the top third (so i may have slipped in the meantime).

Anyways, this is my first acceptance, and its just feels amazing to know that ill be a doc in 4 years🙂. I am a year out of undergrad (didnt do the best job applying last year).

I can answer any questions about post-bac programs 👍. This special masters program really helped me study like a med student, and its the only reason I had 5 solid interviews this year (last year i had no interviews)

Happy Acceptance Day to some lucky out-of-state male! I declined my acceptance, after a year of deferment, on the 15th. Going to grad school instead. Good luck to you all. EVMS is a great place to be I'm sure.

Congrats! Maybe we'll be classmates if I get off the waitlist too. I hope OOS starts moving soon. I'm beginning to lose hope...🙁

I think i'm going down to EVMS with my parents to do our own second look (since I just got accepted 🙂). We are probably gonna head down there next Friday (5/25). Any of you M1s out there willing to give a quick tour/answer some questions (or M2-M4s for that matter)? I know you guys are probably hitting finals and all that, so I don't expect you to spend the whole day with us.

Anyone else gonna be in that area next weekend. It'd be nice to meet some possible future classmates as well 😎.

PM me if you're available. Thanks in advance.

Anyone in Norfolk know good places to grab a beer in Norfolk I will be moving there next weekend.

Also any interest in a happy hour so some of us can meet this weekend?

I'm a waitlisted OOSF, just wondering, has anyone heard of the "on-deck" list? Apparently, there is a group of people pulled from all over the waitlist that are selected for subjective factors, and those are the ones that acceptances are offered to first. This is according to the lady in the admissions office....

That's news to me. Do they tell you if you're on this "on deck" list?

Those of you that have been accepted by telephone first, how many days (after the call) did it take for your acceptance packet to arrive by mail?

I was accepted by phone on the 15th, and it is now the 19th and I still haven't gotten the packet. What's more is that I only live an hour away from EVMS, so it should have come within a day or two.

Just want to hear from you guys before I call the Admissions Office and talk to them.

Took me a couple of weeks back in December. Give them a call and Im sure theyd be happy to tell you.

I also got my acceptance on the phone on the 15th. She told me on the phone that they were sending the letters on Wednesday. I received it in the mail on the 18th (yesterday). I live in northern va. I'd call on Monday if you dont get it, because you only have 10 days to respond.

I just got offered a spot in next year's class and am trying to decide between EVMS and another school out of state. Both are strong well respected schools, so I feel like my choice is comming down to things like: do students who go there love this school? Is the faculty really as supportive as they say they are? Do you really have opportunities to explore specialty intersts and primary care? Is housing nice? Is the town nice? Do students really work together or is it super competitive?

If any current students or recently accepted ones who know the school well could tell me what about EVMS drew them to the school I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hope this helps. I'm an incoming student, but I've been here for the last two years working on another degree.

Gonna go with a big yes to students loving this school. I run as an EMT with a few and they all did everything to convince me to choose this school over any other. THey were very enthusiastic. The environment is very cooperative. Every shares notes and such. THey also get out and enjoy themselves outside of school. Housing in ghent is nice, a bit pricey, but nice. Norfolk is one of the cities where you have your hits and misses, but just ask any current student or soon-to-be one from the area to get the low down. Plus, there's always Virginia Beach... The hospital system here is great. I work in one of the hospitals right now and love the friendly atmosphere.

been talking with the admissions office the past couple of weeks. the waitlist is weird in the sense that they do actually pull people from all over the list (confirming what a previous poster said.) if an In State Female withdraws her acceptance, they'll pull out another ISF, regardless of her position on the waitlist.

does anyone know what the phone interview is like? I have one set up with Dean Solhaug. I wasn't interested in getting interviewed, I just wanted to know what was wrong with my application so that I could fix it for next year. I'm not sure if I should be preparing myself to get grilled with the normal interview questions or not. Any insight there would be appreciated.

Hi guys, I'll be joining you in the fall, I'm so excited! Anyone else this year from UVA or VT?

The phone interview isn't really an interview, per se, it's more his way of getting to know who you are, and since he reviews your file before you go in, if you ask him what you can do to improve, he's quite willing to tell you. I did that back in March, he told me I needed more exposure to medicine (even though I'd been working at the NIH for a year). So during April, I hung out with a couple of doctors and learned a bit about academic medicine up at John Hopkins, sent him an update near the beginning of May, and was accepted after that.

I'm going back to Virginia Beach around the middle of July if people want to hang out. I'd love to meet you all, though I'm not a big fan of alcohol. The most I had was this past weekend, 4 parts coke, 1 part bourbon, and I got a headache 😀
