Howdy my SMP Compadres

So I am torn and would love to hear my fellow SMP'ers opinions. As of this morning I have recieved an acceptance from Georgetown and EVMS. EVMS has a great record of placing students into their medical school. 90% of students get in of all students entering their program. It's also $10k less in tuition than Georgeown and of course you dont pay D.C. rental rates. D.C. sounds riskier, but carries more prestige, a 25% chance to go to georgetown for medical school, and a vibrant, fun loving city. Norfolk, from what I hear, is a bit family oriented 👎 . Call my captain cautious but I am leaning towards EVMS. Any thoughts?

It's run exactly like Georgetown, just smaller class sizes. EVMS = Eastern Virginia Medical School. Google it and you can read all about it. Now, back to my original question.

well, i would take the most likely senario approach:

georgetown's most likely scenario: you spend a year in gtown but don't get to enjoy the city that much b/c you'll be studying. i don't mean to doubt your abilities, but *assume* that you are not a part of the 10-20% that get into gtown directly after the program. you may go to med school X, but will not know what X is until the end of hte year. you may or may not be in a nice city, and may or may not like your options. in fact, gtown boasts ~85% acceptance into med school within 2 years of hteir program. you might end up waiting even longer...

evms's most likely scenario: you spend a year studying but don't really go out much b/c you have to study. *assume* you do well enough to gain acceptance along with the majority of hte smp class. you breeze through ms1, do some tutoring and some research, and then go into ms2. you'll probably often be bored and frustrated by norfolk, but you'll have your buddies from the smp class to commiserate with and you can all be bored together. ms3 and ms4 are spent doing electives, and you use that time to go to other institutions (georgetown perhaps? 🙂) to do some rotations.

at the end of both scenarios, you graduate summa cum laude and become Dr. Tooth, MD, PIMP. 😀

the gtown name is a good one, but the chances are mediocre that you will get an MD from them. Because of that, it's not really a question of "where do i want to go to medical school?" but really "would i be willing to postpone med school for another year after an smp?"

i tried to write this post as objectively as possible, i hope it helps. whatever happens, congrats and g'luck 🙂

You're the best man. We must have been seperated at birth because that is exactly what went through my mind. It's starting to look a lot like Norfolk. There has to be some young divorcee's running around looking for a slightly balding, slightly older "ie more mature 😉 " buxom SMP student don't you think? jintonic5, what are your plans? How are you fairing in the SMP debacle?

hehehe, i've noticed that a lot of my girlfriends are looking more for secure men who can treat them well as opposed to the young metrosexual frat boy of yesteryear-- so i wouldn't be too worried. 😉

i haven't applied to any smps yet, but this upcoming cycle i will... i have the mcat in 30 days and i'm going to take upper level bio classes a la carte for the next year. luckily my parents are willing to let me be a mooch-- i think they figure i'll be able to support them better in old age if i'm a doctor, as opposed to someone who "intends to walk the earth" aka "be a bum" (pullp fiction reference 🙄 ).

Sweet! I am soo going up to you during Orientation and saying, "Hey TiggidyTooth! What's up?" Haha!

Tooth, you got into EVMS! Congratulations! You've been waiting for that forever.

I went thorough the same thing as you man. I know how you feel.

Thanks man!! Let me ask you what made you decide on going to georgetown? EVMS's success rate is hard to pass up so it must have been something compelling.

Tooth, I'll PM you with my answer.

Hey Tooth, Tonic, Bear and all. I really like the tonic's first reply- as it is precisely my personal assesment of the schools. I was accepted at BU and EVMS and had to make the decision, and was waiting to hear from Georgetown when I made my decision.
I decided that although Georgetown (and Boston) have great atmospheres and reputations, I wanted the greatest gurantee on my investment. I like taking risks- the pay off can always be greater. However, the safe road just didn't seem so bad. I look forward to meetin all the evms smp'ers in a few weeks!!! 😀

Thanks for the replies!! Well, me being 27 and hungry to get going with my career I have opted for EVMS' SMP program. I graduated with a 2.2 GPA back in 2001 and have been battling against the bear that is a low GPA for quite a while now and this program will certainly blow some air into my sail.

Good luck to everyone!!!

aww 😀 i just want to say that i think that the post bacc forum is AWESOME (better than the pre-allo one-- too many overcritical uber competitive pre-meddie types 😉 )

Could you please tell me little more about the EVMS?
Is it too late to apply this school?
help....^^

It's too late to apply to this year's class which starts in 3 weeks, but here's a site giving you some info on it if you would like to apply for the incoming class of 2006...

The OP claimed that 90 percent of EVMS students get into the EVMS med school, but the website below only claims a 75 percent acceptance rate into "some medical school," which might include offshore and DO schools. Which figure is accurate?

i think it depends on the year-- the program is so small that the difference between 90% and 75 is only a few people. overall tho, if you do the evms program you definitely tip the scale in your favor by an extraordinary degree.
