So here is the question. I have read a lot of great things about the EVMS program(hight acceptance rate to EVMS, small class size, no glide year, etc. etc.)

My question is for those of you who did the EVMS, do you wish you had possibly done the Georgetown?

For those of you who did the Georgetown program, do you wish you had done the EVMS program?

Seems like they both have pluses and minuses, I am just curious what everyone's opinion is if we were to compare them head to head. Thanks in advance!!

I did the georgetown program and now I'm at EVMS.

Positives about G'town
1) more prestigious school (I feel like I got a few extra interviews based on just this)
2) the classes - at g'town we had to take immunology/microbiology and neuroanatomy (which really helped to prepare for neuroscience)

Negatives about G'town
1) The school (in my opinion) is pretty run-down
2) I didn't get a great attitude from the students ... I feel like EVMS med students have a better relationship with med masters than Georgetown med students do with SMP students.
3) I personally don't like DC ... it's so expensive

All in all ... im glad i went to georgetown for the masters program, but it cost me more in tuition.

if your goal is to get into any med school as fast as possible (meaning u dont mind being at EVMS for the next 4 years), then hands down, do the evms program.

gtown is far from a sure thing. the numbers they have quoted- 50% of students matriculate without a glide year- is true but deceptive. the majority of these students would have gotten into med school without this program because their numbers are stellar to begin with, but they simply applied late the previous cycle. did the smp help them? sure, it probably got them more interviews than they would have without the program and its an impressive topic of conversation during the interview. did the smp help students with lower gpa/mcats? yup, it did help me, but u have to rock the program- talking bout 3.7>.

there arent many sure things in the application process. if u dont mind matriculating into evms, then by all means attend their program.

I agree with markboonya. I probably coulda got into EVMS the previous year, but just didn't apply to that many schools and sent in stuff late.

I got like a 3.9 in the program and I got (very late) interviews at Penn State and Georgetown. I probably only go those interviews because of the SMP year. I withdrew my g'town app, because I definitely liked EVMS better, and I was waitlisted at penn state (never got in).

Definitely check out the schools first. If you like Georgetown, then go for it. G'town interviews about 50% of the SMP students and accepts about 15-20% of the total SMP students. If you get good grades in the program, you have a very high probability of getting an interview. They told us that g'town doesn't really look at your past grades, but the grades you are getting that year (which is why they give interviews so late).

I'm probably rambling, but if you have questions about the SMP program at gtown, feel free to message me. just to let you know, I'm not on SDN that often

I am currently a Med Master at EVMS and am happy with my decision to attend the program. The impression I get from the faculty at EVMS is they really do want all the Med Master's to get into med school. Also, I find my fellow classmates are friendly and if you high pass or honors a class you will not have to retake it next year if you attend EVMS.

Also, I have spoken with a couple of M1's here at EVMS that attended the Georgetown SMP and after speaking with them it seems the majority of them would have rather attended EVMS for their SMP. Makes sense I guess since they would have had a much lighter course load their M1 year if they did attend the EVMS Med Master program.

Stay clear of Georgetown. I am currently a student there and most students will tell you it is a miserable place. Nobody really knows why they have a good reputation. The facilities are very run down and the teaching staff is much below the level one would expect from a top 30 school.

I went to Georgetown SMP and am now in med school. I personally found the teaching quality there to be pretty good. The facilities are old, but to me that's a minor complaint; the reputation and quality of education of schools don't rest on how many shiny new buildings they have. Whatever misery I and my friends experienced while in the program are in retrospect a combination of normal stress of medical school and the anxieties of the application year. I wager you won't find much different elsewhere.

I was actually accepted to other programs and spoke to students in them. I picked up a much better vibe at places other than Georgetown. It's way overrated. There is a difference between working hard because the classes are hard and working hard because the professors are too busy with their research to be prepared for class.
