Instead of making another thread, let's use this one for this year EVMS acceptance 😀
Not exactly sure why I didn't do this two years ago, but I'm going to move this to the school specific discussions forum. Y'all are welcome to keep using this thread or not, whichever you prefer. There has been a new EVMS Waitlist Movement thread for this year created in the School-Specific Discussion subforum, which can be accessed from the top of the pre-allo main page. The specific thread can be found here. I highly recommend using that new thread rather than this outdated one 🙂

how long to get a response for an LOI sent to Dr. Solhaug, if a response at all? I imagine things are getting pretty busy there right now.
hes actually never responded to anything i've sent him. and at preview day he said that he simply just cant respond to everything and that it doest really mean anything... he also said he doesnt like when people email him asking him if he's received an loi or anything and juust to assume that he's got it, read it, and passed it to whomever puts things in our files
awesome, that is incredibly helpful. thank you. taking advantage of the nice weather to clean our shed today, need to zone out about acceptances.
I didn't receive anything back, either. I just figured he probably got it.
How often are ya'll sending in LOI? Once a month? Is this overkill?
waitlist has pretty much stopped moving in terms of our placement on it, just called today. hopefully it starts moving in our favor soon.

Thats good news...hope we start hearing good news one by one very soon 😀 seriously can't wait to get this limbo state over with!
yeah, i'm in at a few places, but EVMS is #1 for some very important reasons, so this waiting is driving me nuts.
Congrats on your acceptance to other places. Would you mind sharing what those important reasons are? Do they include the heart hospital, the children hospital, or the food around the area? 😀

Some people have real life problems and concerns. As a doctor, I hope that you use more tact.

Sorry that it came out wrong. I do like EVMS facility and actually think the food around town was quite good.I pretended not to notice the sarcasm.... thanks for the backup.

I hope that you know that I'm in the same boat as you are with possibly more problems. Why are people so quick to assume the worst?🙁
Hey guys!
I'm an OOS applicant here and I am on the wait list (as of 09/10). I'm already decided on my school for this fall (Go Huskies!!!) and it won't be EVMS. I'll check in and let you know if I am given an offer at EVMS and when I turn it down.
Ok, peace out.

You have nothing to apologize for... seems like some people are just ready to be confrontational and offensive. Info sharing is the point of these threads and there is nothing offensive in asking someone's opinion... if that someone is uncomfortable sharing something with you they should just say so and move on instead of undermining your reasons for attending a school and calling you tactless...
First of all, let's please drop the argument over the why EVMS comments (myself included).
Now as far as the bottom third, the way this works is that every candidate is given a score based on MCAT, grades, and interview. This is used to place a candidate in one of the "thirds." what it doesn't account for are circumstances such as minority status, where that person lives (Hampton roads area for instance), whether that candidate is in state or out of state, and intangibles like how much the interviewers liked the candidate. Other things could be published research (which isn't scored) or extra curricular activities that wouldn't show up as a score. Someone should pm that person and ask these questions if you are that worries about it, but 99% of us waitlistees will come off the top third. Oh, sorry, one last thing to consider is the rumor that they replace spots with people that have very similar demographics.....
that's pretty passive aggressive if you ask me. I really didn't see anything wrong with it in the first place. How can you possibly interpret sarcasm over an online forum??? Tactless, no. Guilty of phrasing a question possibly not the right way, probably. No harm no foul. Info sharing is important, but I'm in no contractual agreement to disclose any personal family related reasons for wanting to attend EVMS over the other 3 schools that I'm accepted to.
The food comment was a bit odd, but hey, if there is something special about it that I was missing, now I know. I did eat somewhere in Ghent that was pretty sweet southern style cooking with a modern twist, it was fantastic.
So, i've got a 1 year old son and my wife has orders to Norfolk next summer. I have family in the area and I am a big surfer, so those are some of the big time reasons for going to EVMS outside of its outstanding reputation... family stability wins all and good recreation to boot, not to mention a crossfit gym about 4 blocks from the school. Also, I've been published multiple times for research with IVF and ICSI, so i've always dreamed of working in the Jones Institute. The NORVA has sweet music and the cost of living is low-ish.
i think that is about it, Queso, you are in the clear. DrSmday, there were about 4 people in on the undermining, but if you want to give me credit, i'll take it. You can dismount your soapbox now, and we can all focus on one issue....
"Why did someone from the bottom third of the waitlist get accepted recently?" and "Does the ranking even matter?" opinions, answers, conjectures preeez.
I don't have problems, I have personal issues that I don't feel like discussing with total strangers. We are not in the same boat at all.

Really?? How do you know this? (Seriously asking, I'm in the top third OOS and would love to be accepted...)
Combination of a friend at EVMS, discussions with admissions office, and a summary of data from previous threads. I'm not saying it's 100% accurate handed down directly from the committee, but I'm sure it's really close. It also seems to be a really good indicator of an eventual acceptance if you speak with dr. Solhaug
How do you know that you and he are not in the same boat?
Oh, yeah, it seems that you would have no way of knowing that at all.
Instead, apparently you thrive on conflict... and being an a-hole.
lol now I'm even more confused now about the whole 1/3 situation... so your placement in 1/3 depends on mcat/gpa/interview alone while other things in your application can help you get from the bottom 1/3 before the top 1/3 folks?? haha... gets more and more confusing as you think about it
I'm just gonna stop trying to figure out how this works and wait for that big fat envelope...
The runner he offered to call me as a response to my LOI/why was I waitlisted email... I hope at least him calling is a good sign if being on top 1/3 isn't 😀
A little clarification is required here...
bige11 isn't saying that 99% of the top third eventually gets accepted. I believe what he/she means is that most of those who eventually get accepted will come off the top third of the waitlist vs. the middle or bottom third.
Keep in mind that the rates are higher for OOS applicants vs. IS applicants. Hypothetically speaking (completely making up numbers), an OOS applicant may have a 60% chance of getting in off of the waitlist, whereas an IS applicant may have a 40% chance. This is demonstrated many times in previous years' threads where the IS waitlist gets very sluggish while the OOS waitlist is rolling fast. It all reflects back to the rumor about taking people off of the waitlist based on demographics, etc. I'd been glad to discuss this further, but my main point was to clarify the statement above.

And in this regard, there really is no advantage to being an URM, right? I'm guessing that what they do is replace, for example, a white male off of the waitlist for a white male who withdrew his acceptance. Or an AA female on the waitlist for an AA female who withdrew. Is that correct?
hey guys,
first off good luck to everyone! I hope everyone gets an opportunity to go to medical school this year on this thread. I know its not the best news (the best news being that i withdrew an acceptance) but i am taking myself off of the top 1/3 of the waitlist, os. I finally was accepted this year after applying for 3 cycles and doing a post bac program. So good luck to everyone, hope this helps a little. If this is what you really want to do just keep working hard and it will definitely pay off.
Good luck!

Called today... "no real movement in the waitlist yet..." said the lady! I am sick of waiting!!!
12 days until the big day, I guess. 😛
Anyone out there who wrote and didn't hear back from Dr. Solhaug?
I really want to know why they didn't accepted me. The director just said I didn't have enough score to be accepted and didn't have any weak spot in particular. *sigh*
