no news. and i would love for them to get here too. I'm having a difficult time renting out my condo, and i think students are holding out till the know what they'll be getting from financial aid.

It's sad too. The condo is in such a great location, its really nice....its an honest shame i can't find someone to live with me.

Oh, i DID, however, get a nice fat BILL from evms. I guess they have their priorities in gear.

Phishfood and Paxlax:

I'm still looking for a place to live. Can you tell me where you guys are living? How much are you paying a month, how many minutes away from EVMS, and most importanly, are there any vacancies left? 😀

I'm living at a place a little further out from campus. They have both apartments and townhomes that you can rent, tho I am pretty sure the townhomes are spoken for. It is less than ten min from EVMS and the staff there seem to be very nice. I chose this particular development because I have a large dog that I needed to accomodate, and they were willing to do so. My rent (including pet fee) is under 800/month. PM me if you want the number.

Yeah even though I am really excited about EVMS, I feel as though I am completely in the dark here... I'm moving down to Norfolk August 1st... We have orientation on the 14th (I think), where or when.... I don't know. I really haven't gotten any correspondence from EVMS other than my bill...... I applied to BU's program and got in and they literally sent me a giant package with info on all the classes on the school on the area on the program, financial aid.... Also what's up with the immunizations thing. It says deadline June 15th... but that didn't happen. I called um up and they said oh lets try to get it in by August 1st.... I have a piece of paper from my undergraduate school saying I have had so and so immunizations down and the dates on which I had the vaccine... but the paper says I need lab results? Have you guys filled that out yet? Oh well... i guess its a sign your check, close your eyes, and leap kinda of situation... goodluck to all you guys, see you in a couple of weeks.

Rob,

Here is a link to my craigslist ad, which is pretty much the same ad i've posted at the evms sinapse website. If you want pictures, I have some as well. I actually did the walk to campus from my condo, and it was precisely 2 minutes to get there (at a normal, not too fast and not too slow, pace)....so other than the hague club apartments (which has a 40+ person waiting list) i think that i am the closest property to campus.

ETA: the most important part of the post, the ad.

Orientation is in three weeks and I am starting to get worried about my housing situation (it doesn't help that EVMS hasn't sent my financial aid package yet). Could you PM me with a link to the pictures?

I have called a couple of times with the very questions recently brought up in this post. About the immunizations: whoever it was that I talked to (I think it was Nicole Preist) said that it did have that due date on it but there is no penalty for turning it in late, as long as you do. The lab work in the sheet is a titer which means they draw your blood and test for immunity.

As for the apt money thing: I called about that today and, evidently, they have a sheet that they have specifically designed for students needing to prove income for apartments. It simply states that you are a student at evms, when you start, when you are expected to graduate, what degree you are working on, and how much financial aid you are going to get. You just have email the director of financial aid (I can't remember her name right this second but it is on the financial aid webpage) and she will send it to you as an email attachment. Well I haven't actually received said email with attachment as of right this minute but I will let you know when I do.

Rob

I can email you the pictures if you have give me an email address

for the people who have gone through the program, do a lot of people who attend the masters program get into other med schools, like VCU for example? it seems like the med masters program is a great linkage program for EVMS specifically, but does it do anything for your chances at other schools?

I got that page for the apartment income proof today. It took a couple of days because they seem to be extremely busy in the fin. aid dept (as can be expected this time of year). The sheet seems to be perfect for what I need to lock down the apt. By the way incase you missed it on the webpage... the fin aid package last year was over $41,000.00...... Welcome to debt.....

Anyone know if we get a EVMS e-mail address (which I would assume we do) and know when we are gonna get it? Also is there a generic date when undergrad email addresses end?

better late than ever....I'M IN!!! just got the call yesterday....Virgnia here i come

Congrats on getting in, I knew you would. Now comes the hardest part...FINDING A PLACE TO LIVE. I STILL haven't found a place yet. There is nothing available near EVMS, Ghent village and Pembroke Towers are full. Well, that's not exactly true, Ghent had a 2bed 2bath available for $1445 a month.

And the EVMS sinapse site is no help either. Most of the ads are outdated and even the ones that aren't are no longer available.

Be wary about where you live, after doing a little research online, I found that Norfolk is a pretty ghetto city and they do have a crime problem. Check apartmentreviews.com and apartmentratings.com to see what other people have to say about certain apartment complexes, very few apartments in Norfolk are rated high. The Ghent area that EVMS is in is the safest and nicest part of town, so I'm hoping I might stumble upon something (but expect to pay out the azz).

thanks rob...i found this place in ghent...pretty nice but expensive...i might just do it because i'm running out of time....try bristoldevelopment.com two bedrooms are 1400 and one bedrooms are around 1000....the building is brand new so thats kinda cool

Hey SGod I'm there right now. I really like this place a lot. its about a 4-5 miniute drive to EVMS. So its not far at all. This place is realy nice.

i'm going to be an M1 next year and i'm living at the bristol next year. apt #144 so come on by if you'd like! i'll be moving in on the 10th.

hey doom...we are gonna be in the same building...i just reserved my apt there today...i should be moved by wed, but im driving from cali so who knows how long it will take

to you guys living in the bristol next year...what apt #'s are you in and what apt model did you get? that's cool that there will be a few people from EVMS there to hang out with!

Rob, I replied to your post a little ways back about my condo. You were looking for pictures. My place is most likely the closest you can get unless you live in the Hague Club. I have an EVMS student coming tomorrow to look at it. If she is not interested, I will let you know ok? It seems to be pretty much just what you're looking for.

And in other news, I am now situated at 900 Colley Ave., in my condo. If anyone is in Norfolk and would want to get hang out, email me at [email protected] or IM ndawg8402

-Nate

Hey i'm in 127, still getting situated. I got a Granby, and I like the layout a lot. My place is somewhat of a disaster area, but you guys are welcome any time. My screen name is daxfile1. You guys get the new orientation schedule? Looks like we've got a couple of long days ahead of us. Fun times.

I put a deposit down on a place yesterday, but thanks for remembering me! I'll be heading down to Norfolk either Tuesday or Wednesday, see you guys then!

Just throwing it out there again.

Guys.

If anyone is looking for a place to live, I have a BEAUTIFUL condo RIGHT NEXT TO EVMS (as in CLOSER THAN ANYWHERE ELSE). It is a 2BR/1BA, and I am renting it out at the new reduced price of $750/mo. All utilities are included except TV and internet, which comes to about another $50/mo.

email me at [email protected]

someone help me not be all lonely.

-Nate.

Hey guys, I just saw this thread, and I'm going to apply to EVMS for 2008 entry. Any suggestions on when I should send in my application?

After reading these posts, you guys give me hope.

Congrats to all of you!🙂

MDempress..
Are you applying for entry to the Medical Masters program in 2008, or for the M1 Class starting in 2008, or the Medical Masters class starting in 2007 hoping to be one of the lucky that get in to the M1 Class starting in 2008?

If you have any questions just ask and I will do my best to help u out

guys, i'm applying for '07 and just got an invitation to interview..will interview on the 13th of September...any advice? i know it's a panel interview and that they ask a lot of ethical questions..but any buzzwords i should know?

This thread is for EVMS's med masters program, not the med school. I would check out pre-allo for interview questions.

Anyone still alive in this thread? Not too many people interested in the med masters program this time of year, but I'm still trying to find some more information. Anyone available?

I'll try to help with your questions..... what are you interested in knowing?

I am applying to the EVMS program for 2007 entry. How early can apply and what is the turnaround time?

I believe that they start looking at applications begining in Jan. The turn around can be fairly fast (I was notified within a couple of weeks), but the waitlist can be slow moving. I guess the turn around depends on a number of factors concerning the admissions process that I am ignorant to but can vary tremendously. Good luck

I'm thinking of applying too...I know that they require official mcat scores. would the score report that you print out from the online mcat thx system suffice? or do we have to request the score to be sent to evms?

thanks for your help!

Humm.... Thats a good question. I believe that I remember printing the thx thing out, but I am not 100%. The best thing to do is to call up to EVMS. They are very nice and I am sure would be willing to help you. Call Nicole Priest and she should be able to tell you exactly what they are looking for. If she can't tell you she will surely give you the number of someone who can. Anything else?? Good luck!

Hey Packlax--

I've really been a fan of this thread and was wondering if you or your colleagues could evaluate my potential candidacy for the med masters program. I have 3.25 overall from 2 separate careers as a student 10 years apart with a strong finish and a 3.9 science gpa. I will be waiting for 1.5 years to apply while my wife finishes a master's program while I take the MCAT and try to strengthen the other areas of my application--I don't have significant community service as of yet. Anyway I'll be applying broadly and will apply to the EVMS masters program as well.

What do you think I could do to strengthen my application for EVMS specifically? Will they hold being 35 against me? Any unique advice like finessing the admissions office in anyway by showing interest early or anything like that?

Thanks alot!

Well the first question that comes to my mind is: Did you finish your college experience earning a Bachelors Degree? and how long ago was it that you most recently finished? What did you do since graduating?

I don't think that they will hold being older than the average applicant against you as there are some "older" people in the class right now. I strongly believe that if you show good scores and good and a strong desire to put your head down and plow through this rough year, then they will consider you.

Your GPA looks competitive, but a lot will be said with your MCAT scores. I know the site says 23 minimum, but obviously, the higher you get, the better you look. If you could swing it (financially and time-wise) I would suggest taking a MCAT prep course (Kaplan is what I did and really think that it helped but cost about $1500.00).

While you are waiting for your wife to finish school, I assume you will be working. The best thing you can do for your plans to apply to medical schools, is to work in the medical field. Get experience, see how a medical office is run, DO SOMETHING MEDICAL.

I hope I answered all of the questions you asked, if not just post or pm me and I will be happy to answer you.

Yes thank you. I will graduate next semester except 1 class I'll have to tranfer back into to my university to get my degree while my wife gets her master's. I also have extensive patient care experience as an ER tech for a couple of years and as a patient care assitant in a hospital. I was thinking of trying to do something else like research or biotech while my wife is finishing. I guess like you said alot rides on the MCAT. I'll be studying my butt off.

Do mind sharing any general qualitative comments about your experiences? Do you recomend the program over say Georgetown? What's it like at EVMS?

Thanks for your time.

it sounds like you are doing everything right. Working in a lab is great experience especially if you already have signinficant clinical time.

As far as EVMS goes, I love it. It's a small school and I like that (I came from a large undergraduate school and much prefer the small environment here). The teaching staff seem to be both smart, and concerned for their students. If you are having trouble in an area they are happy to spend a little extra time with you to make sure you get it.

Comparitively, the programs at EVMS and Georgetown are somewhat different. Georgetown's post bacc program is large (100+ people I believe) and the proportion that get in to Georgetown school of medicine is small. However their program does have a great acceptance rate to other schools (just make sure you think about the length of the program which can vary, and if there is a gap year). EVMS is small (20 people in my Med Master class) and the proportion that get in to EVMS MD program is excellent with no gap year. However, I do feel that if you want to broaden your application as a whole and go to a school that is not EVMS, then Georgetown is prob your best choice. If you really want to go to EVMS, you can't beat your chances as a Med Master here. ( I want to go to EVMS because they are well known for their primary care physician output so this was an easy choice for me)

I don't know if this thread is still alive, but it was really helpful reading through all the comments. I secured my spot at EVMS for the medical master's program starting this august. I also applied to Drexel's IMS program and the SMP at Georgetown. I think it will be awhile before I hear back from those schools, but if I'm accepted to either one, I'll have to make a decision that, at this point, I am not ready to make. I hear a lot of talk about how the EVMS med master's program is better for people who really want to go to EVMS, but if I want to go to another medical school, Georgetown is the better bet. Does that mean other medical schools regard Georgetown as the better SMP or does it simply mean that entry into EVMS from the EVMS med master's program is more likely than entry into Georgetown med school from the G-town's SMP? Also, my undergrad gpa is 3.24 (science gpa is 3.0). My MCAT score was a 28P. I've been reading some threads where people highly recommend applying to med school the summer before entering the SMP, but I'm worried about not making any gpa cutoffs for secondaries some schools may have. Any advice? Thanks.

my understanding is that while a lot of students from the evms smp end up going to evms, it's not because they couldn't get interviews or acceptances from other medical schools, but because they end up liking evms a lot. the fact that they don't have to repeat courses they did well in makes it an even sweeter deal. someone correct me if i'm wrong.

i didn't apply to gtown beause i didn't like the large class size, the fact that so few students from the smp actually get into gtown, and more importantly, that only 80% of students get into a med school after TWO years (whereas 17/18 evms students got in last year). i've already done an extra year of undergrad so it'll be two years post-undergrad with the smp (with a minimum of seven years more work ahead) so i'd rather just get this whole process done and over and get into meds as soon as possible, but that's just me 😀

I applied to EVMS and got an interview for next month. How do my stats stand for those who have gotten in: about a 3.7 GPA and a 26 on my MCATs. It's really close to where I live so it would be nice. Though I am really interested in some other schools like DCOM and WVSOM and USUHS.

thanks chowchilla. where have you applied?

Founder - Did you apply to EVMS or the med master's at EVMS? If you are talking about the med school, you should go to the med school/allopathic forum. this thread is for the special master's program, but good luck on everything 😀.

i've applied to cincinnati and evms. not sure where i'd like to go though, that is, if i even get accepted :scared:

I appled to the MD program.

My bad about the thread, I just did a forum search and this one came up.

Hey guys, I'm one of the med masters this year. Every once in a while someone will check back here; some other MM's and I were actually just talking about it the other day. I'll start stopping in more to answer any questions you have, and will pass the word on to the other Med Masters that people are starting to post here who will be coming in next year.

I dont know anything about Georgetown's SMP program except what you just said, that it has large class sizes and few people make it into the med school via their SMP. In regards to EVMS, as another poster said, students stay because they come to enjoy the medical school, they already have a reputation here, and they can get Honors or High Pass in classes and not have to take them next year, which is great if you want a highly competitive specialty. I don't feel at liberty to talk about student's acceptances in particular for confidentiality's sake, but I am aware that there are plenty of med masters who have been accepted to other programs, including some top programs in the country. My general advice is this: how well you do in securing acceptances depends nearly entirely on you, and a very small part is based solely on the program you went to. That is to say, going to a school with a very high avg. USMLE score isn't going to give you a very high USMLE score, and going to a program with a low avg. USMLE score isn't going to keep you from studying hard and acing it.

almost forgot. The other major reason students prefer the EVMS MM program is because there's no glide year; you matriculate into the med school (if you get in) as soon as you graduate. Georgetown and many other programs require that you graduate from their SMP program and then apply to med school that summer after graduate, and then you have to wait a year doing your apps before you matriculate.

I dont know of any GPA cutoffs I encountered when I applied, and my stats were very similar to yours. I got secondaries to all schools I applied to. You do want to send your AMCAS in ASAP before school starts, and then you fill in your med master coursework as 'in progress' and keep updating schools on how you're doing. This prevents you from having to hold off and do nothing for a year if you were to do the med master program and then apply.
