Phishfood said:no news. and i would love for them to get here too. I'm having a difficult time renting out my condo, and i think students are holding out till the know what they'll be getting from financial aid.
It's sad too. The condo is in such a great location, its really nice....its an honest shame i can't find someone to live with me.
Oh, i DID, however, get a nice fat BILL from evms. I guess they have their priorities in gear.

I'm still looking for a place to live. Can you tell me where you guys are living? How much are you paying a month, how many minutes away from EVMS, and most importanly, are there any vacancies left? 😀
Phishfood said:Rob,
Here is a link to my craigslist ad, which is pretty much the same ad i've posted at the evms sinapse website. If you want pictures, I have some as well. I actually did the walk to campus from my condo, and it was precisely 2 minutes to get there (at a normal, not too fast and not too slow, pace)....so other than the hague club apartments (which has a 40+ person waiting list) i think that i am the closest property to campus.

ETA: the most important part of the post, the ad.

rob14599 said:Congrats on getting in, I knew you would. Now comes the hardest part...FINDING A PLACE TO LIVE. I STILL haven't found a place yet. There is nothing available near EVMS, Ghent village and Pembroke Towers are full. Well, that's not exactly true, Ghent had a 2bed 2bath available for $1445 a month.
And the EVMS sinapse site is no help either. Most of the ads are outdated and even the ones that aren't are no longer available.
Be wary about where you live, after doing a little research online, I found that Norfolk is a pretty ghetto city and they do have a crime problem. Check apartmentreviews.com and apartmentratings.com to see what other people have to say about certain apartment complexes, very few apartments in Norfolk are rated high. The Ghent area that EVMS is in is the safest and nicest part of town, so I'm hoping I might stumble upon something (but expect to pay out the azz).
Phishfood said:Rob, I replied to your post a little ways back about my condo. You were looking for pictures. My place is most likely the closest you can get unless you live in the Hague Club. I have an EVMS student coming tomorrow to look at it. If she is not interested, I will let you know ok? It seems to be pretty much just what you're looking for.
And in other news, I am now situated at 900 Colley Ave., in my condo. If anyone is in Norfolk and would want to get hang out, email me at [email protected] or IM ndawg8402

Well the first question that comes to my mind is: Did you finish your college experience earning a Bachelors Degree? and how long ago was it that you most recently finished? What did you do since graduating?
Yes thank you. I will graduate next semester except 1 class I'll have to tranfer back into to my university to get my degree while my wife gets her master's. I also have extensive patient care experience as an ER tech for a couple of years and as a patient care assitant in a hospital. I was thinking of trying to do something else like research or biotech while my wife is finishing. I guess like you said alot rides on the MCAT. I'll be studying my butt off.
Do mind sharing any general qualitative comments about your experiences? Do you recomend the program over say Georgetown? What's it like at EVMS?
Thanks for your time.
it sounds like you are doing everything right. Working in a lab is great experience especially if you already have signinficant clinical time.
As far as EVMS goes, I love it. It's a small school and I like that (I came from a large undergraduate school and much prefer the small environment here). The teaching staff seem to be both smart, and concerned for their students. If you are having trouble in an area they are happy to spend a little extra time with you to make sure you get it.
Comparitively, the programs at EVMS and Georgetown are somewhat different. Georgetown's post bacc program is large (100+ people I believe) and the proportion that get in to Georgetown school of medicine is small. However their program does have a great acceptance rate to other schools (just make sure you think about the length of the program which can vary, and if there is a gap year). EVMS is small (20 people in my Med Master class) and the proportion that get in to EVMS MD program is excellent with no gap year. However, I do feel that if you want to broaden your application as a whole and go to a school that is not EVMS, then Georgetown is prob your best choice. If you really want to go to EVMS, you can't beat your chances as a Med Master here. ( I want to go to EVMS because they are well known for their primary care physician output so this was an easy choice for me)
my understanding is that while a lot of students from the evms smp end up going to evms, it's not because they couldn't get interviews or acceptances from other medical schools, but because they end up liking evms a lot. the fact that they don't have to repeat courses they did well in makes it an even sweeter deal. someone correct me if i'm wrong.I don't know if this thread is still alive, but it was really helpful reading through all the comments. I secured my spot at EVMS for the medical master's program starting this august. I also applied to Drexel's IMS program and the SMP at Georgetown. I think it will be awhile before I hear back from those schools, but if I'm accepted to either one, I'll have to make a decision that, at this point, I am not ready to make. I hear a lot of talk about how the EVMS med master's program is better for people who really want to go to EVMS, but if I want to go to another medical school, Georgetown is the better bet. Does that mean other medical schools regard Georgetown as the better SMP or does it simply mean that entry into EVMS from the EVMS med master's program is more likely than entry into Georgetown med school from the G-town's SMP? Also, my undergrad gpa is 3.24 (science gpa is 3.0). My MCAT score was a 28P. I've been reading some threads where people highly recommend applying to med school the summer before entering the SMP, but I'm worried about not making any gpa cutoffs for secondaries some schools may have. Any advice? Thanks.
thanks chowchilla. where have you applied?
Founder - Did you apply to EVMS or the med master's at EVMS? If you are talking about the med school, you should go to the med school/allopathic forum. this thread is for the special master's program, but good luck on everything 😀.
I dont know anything about Georgetown's SMP program except what you just said, that it has large class sizes and few people make it into the med school via their SMP. In regards to EVMS, as another poster said, students stay because they come to enjoy the medical school, they already have a reputation here, and they can get Honors or High Pass in classes and not have to take them next year, which is great if you want a highly competitive specialty. I don't feel at liberty to talk about student's acceptances in particular for confidentiality's sake, but I am aware that there are plenty of med masters who have been accepted to other programs, including some top programs in the country. My general advice is this: how well you do in securing acceptances depends nearly entirely on you, and a very small part is based solely on the program you went to. That is to say, going to a school with a very high avg. USMLE score isn't going to give you a very high USMLE score, and going to a program with a low avg. USMLE score isn't going to keep you from studying hard and acing it.I hear a lot of talk about how the EVMS med master's program is better for people who really want to go to EVMS, but if I want to go to another medical school, Georgetown is the better bet. I dont know of any GPA cutoffs I encountered when I applied, and my stats were very similar to yours. I got secondaries to all schools I applied to. You do want to send your AMCAS in ASAP before school starts, and then you fill in your med master coursework as 'in progress' and keep updating schools on how you're doing. This prevents you from having to hold off and do nothing for a year if you were to do the med master program and then apply. Also, my undergrad gpa is 3.24 (science gpa is 3.0).
