FOR THOSE WHO ARE ACCEPTED FOR THE CLASS OF 2010 PLEASE ADD! Hopefully, we can be buddies...We will all make it guys!
First, it'll be quite a bit more than $300k, because interest starts accruing on most of the loans as soon as you cash the check.http://www.evms.edu/students/fin-aid/budgets/md.html
Question for those attending EVMS as out of staters!!
In advance thank you for your response.
I am overwhelmed at the cost, for 4 years it is 262,603. (As a resident, how can one pay that off? Isn't the salary around 30k a year, does one live with their parents during residency?)
Also the 1 year SMP is around 45k. So basically I would come out of med school with $307,603.
Does this scare anyone? How would i be able to pay this? Is there a time limit to pay this off, i don't want my credit score to be destroyed.
I just want to know if others have been able to fund this amount through GradPlus, etc or does one have to seek private lenders?
Thank you again!!!

Your cost of attendance is what's eligible for federal aid. As much as you possibly can, stick to federal aid. That means subsidized Stafford, unsubsidized Stafford, and GradPlus. Private loans do not follow the same rules.
Federal aid last week became subject to income-based repayment. This is good, because the emergency forbearance on which residents used to depend is gone. Income-based repayment means that your monthly payments can't exceed some reasonable, published percentage of your income.
So the good news is that you can borrow federal dollars to fund that $300k education, and that those federal dollars come with repayment programs that (in theory) allow you to pay rent during residency.
The bad news is not what you're thinking, that you'll find out during residency that you can't afford the debt you took on. But obviously all that debt is still horrifying.
EVMS, and SMPs in particular, are med school on the 5 year plan. So unless you use your SMP to get into your state school, you're spending 25% more.
Not too late to be a plumber. They make bank.
Do you have a choice? Without a competitive GPA you pretty much have to be foolish, financially, to pursue med school. Thanks! So would i be foolish if i went to EVMS from the SMP and paid 25 %more... in case state school didn't accept me.
I'll go where I get in.Are you planning on staying there or returning to state school, may I ask?

DrMidlife, so are you suggesting that we shouldnt do the program? I got accepted and am planning to do the program. I was wondering if you can give me your advice. You also mentioned that EVMS is a 5 year plan? I thought medical schools were only 4 years...

I'm not Dr. Midlife but you have a 3.57 and a 29 MCAT. that is in the acceptable range for getting into med school and if you do stronger on your MCAT you will definitely be set. If you are lacking it seems to be lacking in clinical experience which I didn't see much of from your ECs in your previous post. You may not get in a california school but if you apply broadly in the midwest and east coast I'm sure you'd get in somewhere. I don't think you should waste money on a SMP knowing how expensive it is but if you still want to do it do it. Just remember that interest will accrue and its another 45,000-65,000 for any SMP. If you are going to do an SMP then perhaps EVMS is a blessing in disguise cuz its cheaper.
One thing about financial aid (at least for this year for the MD): the subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loan amounts ($43,000) don't even cover the cost of tuition for out-of-state students. I hope this is something they will change next year. M3/M4 years cost slightly more and you will get more Stafford loans to adjust for the difference.
That being said medical school is a lot of debt, yet hundreds of students have gone through a similar situation and are still clamoring to go to medical school even as prices rise. Being out-of-state at EVMS makes it a more difficult decision down the line if you want to do primary care unless you have another source of funding i.e. scholarship, family funds, etc. Hopefully despite everything being a primary care physician will still be worthwhile and enjoyable - you just break even much later than your specialist counterparts.
ImmunoRock,
But a lot of out of state students at EVMS also have GradPlus for those who don't have scholarships family funds, correct? Aside from calculating tuition... they consider that you have other expenses like rent, etc and food right?
Thanks!
3. Very, very few med schools have tuition that comes in under Stafford. The annual Stafford limit (sub + unsub) is $20,500. There are only 32 med schools that offer sub-$20,500 instate tuition. In other words, this is so totally not an issue specific to OOS or EVMS.
Hmm, I'm not sure about that. I believe the Stafford limits are higher for the MD program. That ~$43,000 ($8500 sub and $34500 unsub) number for Stafford sub+unsub was what EVMS financial aid gave me. Daedalus, is that what your financial aid packet says as well? I know of a private school in California whose Stafford amount covers the cost of tuition+fees at least, though it might just be an outlier. My point in mentioning this was the fact that out-of-state students will have to take out GradPlus or private loans to cover the full cost of attendance for EVMS (which may be the same case for other schools as well) and since these loans run at higher interest rates, there's just more more debt involved.
Does anyone know if once you have been accepted to the SMP at EVMS, that you can defer your acceptance until one year later.
i.e. Go there an work for a year before starting the SMP so that you get in state tuition?
THANK YOU!!
Hey Guys,
I was just curious if anyone has received financial aid packages yet? I have been waiting patiently, and called the office a few weeks ago....they said 30 days before the 1st day of school, but tomorrow would be 30 days and I still haven't heard a peep. I'm starting to get a bit nervous. I'm also waiting on a bill for our tuition so I can secure a 401k loan for school. I'll probably call again tomorrow, but if anyone has news please update me!
Thanks!

Hello guys,
I am going to EVMS SMP but there was a question that came to mind. I was wondering what program do you guys think is better or what are the pros and cons of both programs?
What if you wanted to go to a program that will offer you a better opportunity than the host SMP school? Will Drexel offer a greater chance to go to other schools?

At this late in the summer, is it safe for me to assume that EVMS has finished looking at the top third of the waitlist and have filled its seats?
Thanks,
A.
so what are some good apartment complexes/buildings to live in? I was going to live at one but the landlady turned out to be kind of a nutcase...
I'm flying in next week, so if you guys have any recommendations, thatd be great!
Hello Former EVMS SMPs,
I was wondering if you guys had trouble finding time to do your secondaries?
