When residents are applying for fellowships, what exams are looked at?

Surgeons have ABSITE.

How about the IM, Path, Rads, etc., do they also have a specific exam?

IM has an in-service exam, but the scores are not used in fellowship applications. The only exam scores that are asked for are the USMLE.

Hey, I wonder if Step 3 score is important for IM fellowships????
In general, what are the things important to obtain IM fellowships? Well, right now I don't even have a residency yet, just applied, but i am just wondering. Anyone here could help?

There have been a number of threads discussing this topic in the IM forum. Briefly, USMLE scores are less important for IM fellowships than they are for residency. IMO programs couldn't care less about step 3, especially because so many applicants haven't even taken step 3 yet. Plus for the most part fellowship programs recognize the USMLE for what it really is -- a licensing exam that has no predictive value in how good of a physician you will be. They don't need it as a screening tool because there are so many fewer applicants in any given subspecialty compared with the total number of IM residency applicants. Fellowship applications are more about who you know, your letters of recommendation, your clinical evaluations, past/current research and your clinical and research interests.

There have been several discussions about this issue in the past if you do a search in the IM forum. If I have time, I'll see what I can pull up.

Wonderful information AJM.
Now I feel I got answers for most of my questions regarding fellowships.
Thank you for your time and help.
Good day!
