Exercise in Med School?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you have a rubberized track you can run on in your neighborhood or at your gym?

Also, I'm pretty sure I've broken 3:00 in an olympic. I'm more of a short course guy, and more of a natural anaerobic athlete. I do the longer stuff for fun, and for a challenge.

I lol'd IRL for about 5 minutes. That post is 10/10!

I do triathlons too, and I could see where your concern might come from, considering it is time consuming training. I am starting medical school this august and I am really nervous that I won't be able to put full effort into training next year, but I've spoken to a good amount of medical students and residents that find the time to get it done. You can do it, it's just a matter of making it a priority over the other things you might want to do in your free time. I think triathlons are a great way to stay in shape, and if you do them competatively like I do, they are a great way to burn off some steam! This will probably even help burn off some stress from med school as well.

I would also like to add, that if you record the lectures or record your voice reading the chapters or vocabulary, you can use that while you ride. I know its not as riveting as Mozart when you train. But, heck you can kill two birds with one stone.

Best of luck on your next race

Great advice. I'll definitely try to do that. Thanks man.

And for Triathleticgirl: 2:50 is an awesome time, for anyone, male or female. You should be really proud.
I just happen to be ridiculously sick at triathlons 😀

not to mention modest

Haha

I was kidding. Kink of. Actually no, not really. 🙂

That's ok, I'm awsome at everything I do, sometimes it is daunting to hone my skills down enough to try to fit in with the 'ordinary' people out there

People just don't understand how stressful ultimate awsomeness is

Female version of me? I think so!

Going to use the philadelphia marathon

PR for my best triathlon (olympic) is 2:50

Best half marathon: 1:51

qualifying for boston can be tough, I've known a few people who've tried year after year, and just can't do it. But not to be discouraged, it's achievable. Whats your PR for a marathon? have you done a full length (26.2 miler) yet? My inner personal trainer is coming out.

no full length yet. I've done 20 mile runs.

Got you beat on the half 1:42

Come to LECOM B, good running weather and we can pace each other

Isn't that a sprint-distance race? Or even shorter? You don't need to train for that. You can just roll out of bed and do it.

Thanks, but no thanks! I'm not sure if you could fit your head into my gym to train me. =)

ha, ha touche....I like you, I think LECOM-B is the place for you, only the very witty, most incredible people are allowed to go there. We must all gather in the same local so there are not hate crimes against us by lesser, jealous people

I am applying for 2010 and I will absolutely keep that in mind🙂

You're half marathon time is amazing! How can I get my time down like that? I want to qualify for Boston for 2010.. and its an 8:23 mile for all 26.2 miles.

I walked a vigorous half mile at about a 6 minute pace today. Beat that. 😛

I could never do running. I just get way too mentally bored and then shin splints come in. I was a long distance swimmer for a long time and did more 100+ mile bike rides than I can remember.

Always been more of a weights and sprints guy. ...and the agility stuff for football and tennis.

Man you girls are harsh. I am starting to feel that my DaVinci-code-style vow of celibacy is the right decision.

Now if everyone will excuse me, I'm going to go flog myself with a whip, and see how tight I can get a barbed wire garter to fit around my thigh.

Blah Blah Blah

Yep! I'm training for it! 👍

Personally, I think thats one thing that really sets KCOM apart from all the others. They seem to make sure everyone has an opportunity to be healthy while attending school.

Well if that is the case you all will have to transfer mid-program to attend whichever school I attend. Naturally. hehehe

Two things to help get your time down. 1) Join a running club like Team in Training, people from all sorts of levels to train with and keep you focused. 2) Run your marathon at the Napa marathon. The best course for PRs, plus its a qualifier for Boston.

Thanks, but no thanks! I'm not sure if you could fit your head into my gym to train me. =)

well, since I know your hot from your pic on your sorority or whatever fundraiser site... I'll let this slide.

I referred TriathlonGirl to SDN and I know her in real life. And she is hot!

I'm gonna get my *** kicked for this on tuesday.

of course I am, you have good taste.....

as far as getting your time down, two tricks

a) run with someone faster than you. If you are like me you have too much pride (and too much of a reputation to uphold) to let anyone outpace you
b) treadmills, as painful as it is, they force you to run at a particular pace, slow down and you fall on your humbled little a$$

Hi There!

I'm actually at the shore right now, but I'm looking at this addictive site on my phone and I saw your posts. PM me because I've run 5 marathons and the guy I am at the shore with right now who I am dating, can do a marathon in 2:39. I'll get you some info when I get back! G'luck!

And... I've always wanted to do a triathlon but recently decided not to, (I'm getting into tennis instead..ha!) good luck switching to marathons!

Also... I've run the philly marathon before, its a great course. Do you live in philly? You should do practice long runs up on boathouse row. PM me I have lots of info to help ya out : )

I totally agree with A --> it's so hard to run with someone faster than you and not want to trip them the whole time, just kidding, but yeah that definitely would work.

And B --> also a great idea! I just need to figure out at what intervals I should be adding speed, etc.

I'm asking this in seriousness because I've always wondered. When running those long distances how do you guys keep from not getting bored?

I was so mentally bored with my long-distance swimming. I'd set my pace and just kind of check out for a while and then come back in when it was time to pick it up. It is one reason I don't swim any more. I am good at pushing through pain but then I'm just left in this other dimension. Unless it was a 200m or under, I'd end up singing songs in my head and thinking about what I'm going to have for dinner...I didn't have half bad times either. 500 yard freestyle was a 5:10 I recall..can't remember the meter time..more obviously...I was the third place guy on the team usually. Our first place kid swam around a 4:45 500...My 1650 time was quite strong, but I am so far removed from that it would just be making up a time!

The only way to train for swimming is intervals. Everything else is boring.

For running, the only way for me is to have a goal. I hated cardio before I started doing triathlon. Now that I'm actually training for a reason, I love it.

I also wear my Garmin 305 to show me my pace and HR and all that stuff, so its a little more to think about, and a little more active participation than just going out and running.

I also try to do my runs where there are a lot of hot chicks.

i thought this was amusing...
as i took a practice MCAT this morning...I forgot how many liters one mole of a gas occupied at STP (its 22.4 L btw).
I kept doing calculations with 24.8...then I realized why I had that number so cemented in my mind; it was the length (in miles) of the bike leg of an olympic triathlon (40K)!

I love the GARMIN 305, when I run I just do computations in my head. Its the only way for me to not to go insane from boredom. So when I dont want to do any math, I head to the gym and...need I say more?

Hey I had the same question today for my Chem Assignment...At least you have a good reason for getting it wrong...My response was more along the lines...duh, uh, er...uhmmm hehehe

Well, I trained doing a bunch of stuff and had goals. I wasn't just getting in a pool and swimming arbitrary laps. 😉 This was during the meet itself I'd get really bored.

The average morning swim practice was along the lines of.

Warmup => 500m (200 freestyle, 100 of others), 100 kick and 100 pull.

20x 50m F
10x100m F
10x100 m Backstroke
10x100 m Fly
5x 100 m im
5x 500 m Freestyle.

Underwater training, kick exercises, pulling crap.

The afternoon practice wound up being a little more intense. We had our infamous 100x100 while wearing jeans. Our coach had times set up so if you finished after any amount of time you'd have to redo it. It ends up being about 100x150 when you are done.😛 That was murder since the water temp was around the 88 mark.

I might try out the whole triathlon thing sometime...I need someone to train with for that stuff though. Its so tough for me to get sparked into something by myself. I know you (Tex) are along the same size as me, so you probably feel some of the same pains from all that pounding on the body.

I started doing triathlons less than two years ago, and suddenly, everything that has always made me a good athlete for my entire life is now working against me. Big guys and endurance sports rarely mix well.

To be honest, that's part of the fun. It makes it so challenging that it keeps me motivated. That could frustrate some people, I guess, but not me. It keeps me going.

here is what i was able to do while in school. I used to lift every other day and do cardio 3 times a week. However, i quickly found out that lifting at least during my first year was hard, not because i didnt have time, but because afterwards you are just too damn tired to study. So i cut out heavy lifting and stuck with some light lifting (to prevent "sagage", haha) and mostly cardio (usually run like 3 miles) I found that running, esp after long day of lectures or even after a long study session, acutally revitalized me. Take home point, it is very important to get a good sweat goin while in school, defintely helps relieve the stress of school, and the stress of not moving for hours upon hours. (trust me sitting for 6 hrs straight is not good for your lower back. =P, at least for me) good luck!!

On a day that I'm swimming anything longer than 1 mile, I always make sure to go to the gym in my area that has speakers in the actual pool. You can usually hear the music pretty well!

During a tri, the entire time I'm swimming I'm concentrated on not getting kicked in the face 🙂

Triathleticgirl, follow the intermediate or advanced Hal Higdon schedules (free online) and you should be able to qualify for Boston. I qualified on my second marathon by following his advanced schedule and I substituted all speed/hill work for just a comparably distanced easy run. I ended up running a 3:33:26 and I'm not really a runner (I'm a water polo player/swimmer). Also, at the larger marathons they have often have speed groups sponsored through Nike or whoever that carry times such as 4:30, 4:00, 3:30, 3:00 and then people trying to hit those times just follow them, they're usually very accurate.

Enjoy!

1. run up a lot of long hills (or get on treadmill like LauraDO suggested and set it at an incline).

2. try to run at race pace toward the end of your long runs (which are the most important training runs you will do).

3. stay away from track intervals when training for the marathon. you can run on a track if you really want to, but the intervals you really need to be doing for the marathon are long and would be very tedious done on a track.

4. pick a fast course: Austin, Chicago, St. George etc. The course obviously matters, and also want a race big enough to have a good group of people attempting to run the same pace.

just my thoughts. I ran my PR at Austin Marathon several years ago (2:22) I ran a few minutes better than I had at Chicago but was also in a little better shape. I'm sure you can manage your time in med school well and still chase the dream!👍
