Hey all,

I'm a retaker and was wondering what the expected point increase is for retakers? Obviously, getting a 33 the first time around, whereas getting a 28 and then a 33 isn't so impressive, but by what increase in points would adcoms be impressed by. What would make them not think "well, of course he did better, after a year?"

Getting a 28 and following it up with a 33 is pretty darned impressive. The average re-taker does not go up by 5 points. The average improvement is nowhere near 5 points.

The data is from 2008-2010, and is comprised of those who took the test twice in the span of a year.

For those 4500 testtakers who had an initial score range of 27-29, only 14% improved by 5 points or more (7% improved by 5 points, 4% improved by 6 points, and 3% improved by 7 or more. 24% went down a point or more, 12% got the same score, and 50% got a 1-4 point score improvement.
