Good luck to everyone tommorrow!!

Are they still putting experimental passages on the test (the last time I took it was in 2003)? I'm happy with my verbal score on AAMC8 (9) but I'm also the type that never finishes the verbal section. I am using the TPR ranking system so I'm just wondering, if I do a passage that is experimental and then don't get to 1 passage that is by chance a "real" passage, is that going to kill my score or what?

Thanks

there will be a experiemental passage on the verbal....i know one girl from MIT who figured out the experimental passage on the verbal and skipped it...and she got a high verbal score.... 😱

What the heck? How did she figure it out?

I don't know, this type of grab-ass philosophy by the MCAT could bring down my score quite a bit seeing as how the test is really out of ~55 or so instead of the full 60 and if you can't finish it you may be deducting 2 passages instead of 1 since 1 of them is experimental.

Any suggestions/thoughts?

Wow interesting.... well, if I run across any difficult passages, I'll calm myself down by saying "well, it's probably experimental anyway."

wow, i just read that link. I dont know what to think now. Although what i may do is check out the last page real quick to see the titles. Start the test. And when i find a 7+ question passage I guess I will work diligently but not scarifice time if i cant get an answer. This is in response to verbal. In PS and BS im going straight through, we have 8 weeks to debate experimental passages then lol.

i agree. if i see something insane on verbal im likely to either save it til the end or try to do the best i can on it and not dwell on each question. as for PS and BS ive been good on my timing on the AAMC exams if i work straight through, because flipping to see which are hard or easy passages just wastes time, which i cannot afford to lose!

bump - any thoughts on this thread - post mcat?

Did anyone feel the 10q passage might be experimental based on the supporting argument presented in this thread?

i dunno i just cant see a 10 question passage being experimental b/c that'd mean they'd be distributing ppl based on only 50 questions. also, in that link the OP says that there's 'symmetry' but my BS only had 2 orgo passages and 7 bio passages- now even if 2 of the bio passages are experimental, thats still not even distribution- 5 bio v. 2 orgo?

As predicted, the 10 question passage in my booklet was from a recent 2004 publication. Also, the 10 question passages were in the middle section. One of them was V and the other was VII, I think. Honestly, I really dont care as long as I get a 9 or 10 on verbal. But the theory seemed interesting considering the fact that MCAT will be computer based in the coming years. They will probably cut down the number of questions in verbal.

Ahh..this is terrific news. The theory is consistent with the test data reported from today's test as it relates to VR. Wish we could do a year over year comparision to see how it pans out. Where is a datawarehouse when one needs one - oh wait the AAMC has one.

As others indicated, however the theory is inconsistent as it relates symmetry and distribution of the topics on the science side. Perhaps a plausible reason could be that the theory was postulated prior to the change in 2003. Now there is (accordingly to AAMC) a slightly greater emphasis on bio (esp. as it relates to genetics) and a somewhat reduced emphasis on organic. This might explain the skewness on the biological sciences. Though it does leave a hole in PS. The theory is perhaps not indicated for PS as y'all have reported the distribution to be generally in (higher) favor of chemistry.

I have a tendency to feel that the 10q psg on that chick was the experimental, to bring the q total to 50, but that's just my opinion.
