Hello sdn citizens,

I dream about studying abroad, doing rotations abroad, taking summer classes abroad, internships, research, anything abroad during dental school. Kenya, Egypt, China, Russia, I wanna see the world! I will be just entering D1 and I don't really know the possibilities or implications. Is doing anything abroad even possible or reasonable timewise or pricewise? any sources/sites/contact info would be wonderful. Again, this is as long term as Notre Dame gettin back in the bcs 🙁 , so it's gonna take a while, I just wanna dip my toes in the ocean...thankya

Have you ever considered joining the military after dental school? They will pay for your school AND allow you to travel the world and learn dentistry at the same time? Seems like a win-win situation for you!!

I have considered it, but have never been much of a traveler. Plus, my dream is to practice dentistry in a small town here in my home state, hopefully right after dental school. But, if travelin is your thang then military life seems perfect for you!!

Also dont forget that if you plan on coming back to the US and practising here that you will need a degree form an american or canadian school or else you will have to go through the advnaced standing programs and thats a pain.
Personally if i had to choose i would go to an american school ( even though they are ridiculously overpriced)

I think the opportunity is there if you want it. I know at the school I will be attending the students recently went on a mission trip to Peru that was organized through a local church. I think they were there for a couple days doing cleanings and extractions. What a great experience. And you will have the opportunity to do things like that throughut your entire career if that is what you choose.

Go to dentaltown.com and read about some of the charity/mission trips other dentists are doing. I know I've seen several websites of oral surgeons who travel around the world doing tons of cleft lip and palate work for a week or more every year. My personal opinion is that the military is not a surefire way to see the world - rarely do people get their first choice (or second or third for that matter) of where they will be stationed. The recruiter may promise you Europe on a silver platter and you'll be stuck in Kansas for 4 yrs. 😱 But that's just me; I could never sign away my freedom like that.
