I was recently accepted to a school, but I was only given 15 days (!) to send in a non-refundable deposit of several hundred dollars. Has anyone ever heard of a school granting an extension for such a thing? I have an interview at another school in a week and would like to be able to compare these two schools before I make a decision (assuming I'm accepted to both). I don't exactly have a few hundred dollars to waste, so I'd prefer to avoid losing that money if possible.

I think it depends on the school - I know I talked to SCCO today because I was wondering if they grant extensions since that is a lot of money for me to get together in such a short time, and they said they do not :S It does make sense in a way since they only want students who are seriously considering their school to hold a place so that they can fill all the slots with students who actually want to attend. But yeah it does make it difficult if you are trying to decide between schools... But I heard they give at least a partial refund if you choose to go somewhere else after making the first deposit

Non-refundable? That's quite odd when you've been accepted so early. May I know which school is doing it? I was under the impression that it was only done late in the cycle, after or close to most schools deposit refund deadlines as they wanted to secure their full class.

It was most likely SCCO - they require a $750 deposit to "hold your seat." If you choose not to attend, you only get $250 back.
It is quite a large sum of money either way. =/
In the whole scheme of your optometry tuition wherever you go, though, $500 not extremely significant.

yeah it was SCCO i was talking about - but the point you raised is exactly what my adviser told me - it seems like a lot of money now, but in the long run it won't be that significant of an amount

Amen. That amount will seem puny just related to the tuition for your first semester, let alone all of Optometry school.

NECO just gave me a 2 week extension after the 15 days. They said they can't do more than that though.

anyone know if PCO grants extensions?

SCO will give you an extension EASILY.. which you may not even need since they give you 8 weeks to make a decision...

Schools should be ashamed of themselves for nickle and diming students.. what if they have other interviews? They should have the option to attend that interview before deciding which school is best for them.

I know Arizona's deposit is 1000, and if you decide NOT to attend, they give you a an amazing 100 dollars back. :smh:

I actually have an interview coming up and needed an extension from SCO. They gave me 5 weeks, which seems fair, but I foolishly staggered my supplemental applications (mostly b/c I was busy) so all my interviews are spaced out.

I'm glad to know they'll do this. I like how they're don't pressure you at all. 🙂 Maybe I'll cancel my other interview after all. I loved SCO as a school...the city idk...
