I am working on my UOP supplemental application and is asks if I have an extenuating circumstance. This may seem petty so I am wondering if this is considered an extenuating circumstance:

I have had straight A's the past 3 years, literally. This past quarter I was in a pretty serious car accident (rear-ended at 50 mph). The accident caused A LOT of stress on me... having to deal with insurance companies, seeing a chiropractor three times a week, missing some work and school, and fixing the damage on my car. I ended up getting three B's and two A's that quarter. Now, I know that is not BAD, but I am disappointed as I am a perfectionist when it comes to school. :-/ Is this too petty to bring up? Or should I talk about it? Thanks!!!!

Oh god. Sorry about the accident... but seriously? Your grades are fine.

If that's the only part of your application that you are stressed about then stop stressing. Worry about extracurriculars or experience.

I'd talk about the accident during the interview in the context of something that you had to overcome or a big change or something along those lines.

I would second this.

By having to explain your 2 B's that term which differs from your consistent trend of getting A's may suggest to the Admissions Committee that you are a bit too uptight and have yet to experience any (true) extenuated circumstances. In essence, this may reflect your maturity level as well.

On the other hand, UOP's old supplemental question was in the context of something like "If you have taken less than 14 units consecutively, please explain why." The point of this question was to assure that you may be able to handle the 17-19 units load per semester, year-round schooling. However, they removed that question already but you may be able to discuss it in that section as well.

Also, if you cannot think of anything else to write in that section, do you have any deficiencies in your resume (e.g. volunteer experience, pharmacy experience, extracurriculars, co-curriculars)? If so, you probably can discuss about that instead of your grades.

Hope that helps.

I thought most people will leave that question blank? Am I wrong? Would it look back to have no extenuating circumstances?

I think it would look worse to put something in there that is not truly extenuating. Mine was blank and I somehow made it in.

Thank you to everyone! I really appreciate the advice and I won't put it on my app. Gracias!
