I was just wondering what extra-curricular activities (and their positions) everyone is doing/did during college? Also, is there such a thing as ‘too much’, even if all the positions are leadership positions?

well, GPA isnt the only thing that counts to dental schools. i was just wondering what extra-curriculars look good to dental schools.

I think you should do as much as you can and still be able to have a good GPA with a full course load. If you can do that then admissions committees will see that you are a good time manager and will be able to handle the challenges that Dental School may bring. You're only doing too much if you can't keep a solid GPA because your time is too consumed by your extracurricular activities...

well along with being Secretary of the Pre-Dental society, im also a transfer mentor (like a transfer orientation advisor, but we also do things during the year like leading events, and making presentations to various classes), a psychology peer academic advisor, etc. im also an EMT at my hometown on the weekends.

I was just wondering if there was anything more that I can to do increase my chances of getting into dental school, especially since i love leadership and extra-curricular activities.

Also- does being an EMT hurt my chances of getting into dental school, or does it help?

Im kind've starting to think that you are not a real human being. Perhaps a cyborg? Like the terminator.

What types of things do you do as an EMT? (I'm just curious.)

I think it's great that you love being involved. Why don't you just follow your heart and do wherever it takes you? This will give you more meaningful experiences than comparing yourself to others. What you should also consider is that during an interview or personal statement, you may have to draw from experiences. For example, if you've been a club's errand bitch - you won't have a lot to say about what you did/felt/experienced/learned/liked. With that said, it sounds like you are on the right track though. awesome.

At first it sounded like you were doing things for the sake of putting them on your Dental application. I know some people who do this for med school or law school or whatever.. I hate it.

I guess I’m not sure if I’m doing too much or too little extra-curriculars, but I guess the response “Im kind've starting to think that you are not a real human being. Perhaps a cyborg? Like the terminator.” means that I’m doing enough. Lol 🙂

My heart has taken me to all of these extra-curricular activities, because they all have meaning to me. Obviously I’m pre-dental, so that’s why I’m involved with the Pre-dental society (and my president said I’m on a good track to being elected president for my senior year next year). I transferred to Rutgers University- New Brunswick, so that’s why I’m involved with the transfer department- I like helping transfer students from being ‘lost’, like I was. I’m a psychology major, so I like to help people in regards to that. I was pre-med when I got my EMT certification, but with a change of heart (and all of the doctors in my family, including my dad, telling me medicine is horrible now and they forbid me from it), I decided Dental was the way to go; but I enjoy helping people so much so that I have decided to stick with EMT.

As EMT I help anyone who calls 911 for help. I’ve had calls anywhere from beestings to major car accidents. I love that I worked hard in EMT school for my certification (which is like a Bio course), and now I can actually implement what I learned. I think that that’s one of the reasons that I would love to be a dentist because I love to be pro-active in everything I do. I’m that girl that sits front and center in the lecture of 400 people and asks questions to the professor- I love making the most of my experiences. EMT originally was for the sake of my resume, but now it is just a passion for me. (I also love the adrenaline rush, especially being able to go 80 mph in a 25 mph zone, and people moving over to let me go through lol)

I’ve asked some people if being a EMT is good for dental school, and I’ve heard that it might actually be bad- like I’m the pre-med kid who couldn’t hack it, and decided to go dental- which isn’t me. Do you think that this is true?

List as many Extra-ciriculars as possible it can't hurt.
