Hi! I am starting to volunteer in an abortion clinic as administration/clerk volunteering for the first semester, and then the rest of my time I will be having patient contact.

Though its not a hospital, could this be considered as clinical experience? It sure does have clinic in the name! 😉

As long as you have actual patient contact (e.g. counseling, taking history etc.) it would count as clinical.

I'm sure you're already aware, but be very careful with the wording of this activity when it comes time for applications.

What will your role be during that first semester as a volunteer clerk? If you will be serving incoming patients at the front desk, checking them in, making appointments, providing information, helping patients out to their car, then it will be "clinical" as you'll be directly interacting with patients. If, OTOH, you are in a back room opening mail, working with patient records, billing, etc, and have no patient interaction, it would be NOT clinical for med school application purposes.

Thanks so much for your help!

I agree. Calling it a family-planning clinic might go over better in some states.

Absolutely. I totally understand this. It is primarily an abortion clinic but serves for a women’s health clinic overall. Free birth control, family planning necessities etc. I’ll definitely keep the wording conservative. Thank you

Thanks so much. Yes, wording will be important. I appreciate the heads up.
