Extracurricular and Residency

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What specialty?

Big Hoss

Idk honestly. I haven’t actually done work on any patient so I want to keep my options open. So please shout out whatever you know for each specialty.

One thing I kind of don’t enjoy is research (speaking from undergrad experience)

The only "extracurriculars" I've done so far is research and serve as an officer for a dental org. If your school has a dental fraternity, or any sort of dental organization, I would suggest running for an officer position. The idea isn't to open a hospital in Haiti, but to show that you're well-rounded and that you do something productive with your free time (well, what little free time we have anyways).

It's importance varies with which type of residency. But they will help with the interview no matter which residency you're talking about, because you will definitely be asked questions about your LEADERSHIP experiences, ETHICAL DILEMMA, and TOUGH SITUATION, which more varied life experiences outside of coursework will help with.

Ortho is big on research, the others not so much.
Yep. Ortho and research. If interested in Ortho .... It helped me that I attended a DS that also had an Ortho residency. I hung out there all time. Helped an Ortho instructor and an Ortho resident with their research. Anything to get my name in their research.

Bronxcare, St Barnabas, Montefiore, and Maimonides all have paid ortho residencies. Doing a GPR there for a year might work out. In any event, that is paid also. Ortho is still about grades.
