I am just wondering what everybody's thought is about this. I received an F in Chemistry II because of an extenuating circumstance that led to me missing the final. It's hard not to beat myself up over this, but I am retaking it and will probably get an A (as I did in Chemistry I). I was wondering what could I do to prove that this was an isolated incident? Is retaking it and getting the A enough, or do you think that taking biochemistry would be a good idea? Do you think this will significantly hurt my chances?

I think you would have to retake Chem 2 and get that A because it is a pre-req and all (I believe) schools have a minimum of a C or better on pre-req courses. Keep in mind that the grade you receive after course repetition is often averaged with your original score depending on your institution's policies.
Also, the personal statement would be an ideal area for your to explain your extenuating circumstances and I don't think this will hurt your chances too much if you can articulate your thoughts and do well in your other science courses. Best of luck

You need to retake regardless, and obviously getting the highest grade possible will be the best damage control. As for biochemistry, I'd take it because A) it's a requirement or recommended at several schools anyway, B) it's a course in most dschools, so it will help you prepare for it, and C) getting a good grade in another science will only help your sGPA and look good in general.

Some dental schools also have room in their supplemental applications to explain something like that. You could fit it in to questions like: "What else should we know about you?" or "Is there anything in your academic record that you would lie to explain?"

yea retake it and get an A is good...dont worry about it too much. remember, that little chip is only 1 out of a million things that they look at in ur app so...it wont affect you at all if any.

i got an F in music appreciation in my first semester of school (among some other crappy grades over the first year).... i've made significant progress since then and i got accepted. i didn't even explain it specifically anywhere along the way. You can probably use that F to explain how you came out stronger and more motivated after the "extenuating circumstance".
Either way, just make sure you do have an answer in case they ask and stay strong in your other areas (extra curriculars, DAT, etc.) and you should be fine.
