If the forums added an entirely optional feature to allow you to link to your facebook account, would you use it?

For those who would want to use it, it would offer:

  • One-step registration for new members using their facebook account
  • Single-sign-on with facebook for existing members that connect to their facebook account (member can use their own SDN account or facebook account for login)
  • "Like" posts
  • Option to post forum posts to facebook account
  • Option to post blog posts to facebook account
  • Option to use facebook avatar as SDN avatar

Even though it would be optional... I think it would still be dangerous for the premeds/med students/residents who choose to use it.

It's great that SDN gives everyone some degree of anonymity... this fosters an environment that allows us to discuss the shortcomings of certain schools and residency programs, for instance. It would certainly be sad for a short-sighted med student who uses this feature to be retaliated against for speaking out against their school.

Absolutely not. There would be too many privacy concerns that could stem from this.

If it is an optional function, there should be no problem. People should have the right to choose ... they just have to understand the consequences. I say go for it.

People couldn't be A**** then.

I'd use it. 🙂

Nope. I'd like to keep my internet anonymity.

This

And pretty much what everyone else said.

I really don't care if you want to implement it, but I have no intention of ever using it. I would recommend against others using it.

No, cause I don't have a facebook. 😛 I still wouldn't even if I did because I'm a ninja and ninjas don't give away their identities.

the people voting yes are most likely gunners hoping people will give away their identities and sabotaging their careers via facebook.

+1

I might use it, but I imagine most people wouldn't.
I can see the guy who makes all the CollOnTheRoll, ColeOnTheRole etc. nicknames making a fake facebook account to pretend to be you.

I have nothing against implementing it, but I am on here anonymously, no one knows who I am, which is why I can post some personal information like MCAT scores, and that's the way I like it!

At the risk of sounding ridiculosuly crazy...

We know med school adcom persons check this. LizzyM has helped countless SDNers. Admisson people from various schools have an eye on this---it may be more to gague perceptions about their schools, but they check it.

I originally signed up to ask questions about applying. Then I figured I should try to answer some questions since so many helped me. But sometimes I get in a silly mood, and make some useless posts. Sometimes someone is trying to be a tool, so I have some fun back.

Now, when a school checks the board, they may know that 'gonna-be-a-doc123' is interviewing at their school. But, there is no face with that. There is nothing to form any bias from.

I guess what I'm driving at is this: If you put a face with it, what's stopping someone from linking your Screenname, your posts, to your real world name. If you said one out of line thing, and they decide to look it up and see it...

Are they likely to do that? I don't know. Maybe the answer is no. Do YOU want to be the one to find out?

I think you'll get a lot of noobs signing up for it and not realizing fully the consequences.

Great feedback everyone - I think this is going to put a nail in the coffin of this idea. To ensure widest response, I'll open the poll up to all of SDN through the front page.

Bottom right: http://studentdoctor.net

Probably wouldn't use it either. More because I don't like using Facebook and I try to avoid people using it to contact me.

While most people are trying to hide their friends from the admissions process, I am kind of the opposite. I would rather not have all my friends knowing I'm pre med.

No. I like to keep my real life identity somewhat secret. I wouldn't want to be contracted for pre-med advice outside of SDN either. Not that I mind advising, but I prefer the questions all in my PM box instead of scattered in multiple places.

lol there's an old reference...

And no. Not only do I not want personal information linked to from here, I don't want the clueless, countless masses of Facebook swamping here and ruining the forums/exploiting the information here that is only for those worthy enough to look for it or lucky enough to be told 😀

Yea... not happening. I will link my FB to many things, SDN isn't one of them. Not like I'm not easily identifiable but I would hate for one of the schools I'm going to apply to know some of the things I am thinking.

Plus, I know an attending that if he found out I was still reading and posting here, he would kill me.

Few people know of my sn on here and I'd like to keep it that way.

I wouldn't use that feature and I don't think many people would. Just look at how many people are reluctant to link their twitter accounts and that provides more anonymity than facebook.

There has been quite the up to do about facebook at my workplace. People are getting into trouble for writing that they aren't looking forward to going into work or that they had a rough time at work. Social networking represents a new challenge maintaining professionalism with those that we need to be serious with and less guarded with those who we want to have fun or share our frustrations with.

That being said, I recently changed my facebook name and profile information. I got asked if someone hijacked my account, and I just laughed at them. No dummy. Facebook isn't worth the grief of getting into trouble at work or school.

It would be fun to see all your nerdy faces, though! 🙂

If there was a way to prevent anyone in any position of power from ever seeing it, yeah.

Speaking of facebook, can we get some sort of "like" option for posts? Instead of "reply with quote" +1 or 👍 .

It would get rid of people Trolling, unless they really are trolls in real life.
btw, @sustentacular: like +1

Anyone worried about their privacy should take down their MDapplicants.com link. If schools really wanted to know who you were, that website could narrow it down pretty easily.

And for the record, I would definitely use this feature. Great idea. Let's pull the veil of anonymity off of this forum.

If at this point, you don't know how to make your facebook private, you probably should not be linking it on SDN. That being said, there's nothing wrong with account linkage. In fact, I think it would reduce the amount of stupid and unhelpful posts if you could connect a face with the words.

It doesn't matter if you have the privacy settings on with this. All that is needed is your profile picture to be connected with your user name and everything you ever wrote is connected with your face. To me, this actually wouldn't be that big of a deal. I just want to keep my pre-mededness, if you will, secret from some, and don't want random friend requests from people I hardly know.
