facebook accounts during the app process

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No need to do any of that...just block the general public from viewing your profile.

Have you posted something you've regretted doing on facebook that you think could get you kicked out of school? Unless you're talking about how you want to go on shooting sprees or something like that, or about how much you hate a particular dental school, I really don't think it will make a big difference, and if you're only viewable by friends, you'll know if someone named "UCLADENTAL" tries to add you! =p

to what lengths are you going to protect your image? closing your account for a while? getting rid of photos?

Most of the people really don't care about your Facebook profile. Actually, we have professors that are a part of our 'Friends' list who joke about us posting things on Facebook during their lectures and they type of comments that are made about the lecture.

As long as you aren't posting derogatory, insensitive, racist comments, there is nothing to worry about even if they did chose and were able to check your profile.

I acctually heard that dental and medical schools pay to have access to profiles on facebook. I'm not chancing it, so I just deactiviated my acount. lol

No way, the law suit would be staggering.

Funny, I deleted all of my status updates/wall posts from the past 4 years a few days ago on a whim. Might not be a bad idea.

If it's true that adcoms and faculty members do check applicants' Facebook pages, why not take advantage? List works by Schopenhauer and Spengler under Favorite Books, post notes of lengthy literary criticism on Faulkner, join a bunch of trendy, feel-good causes and groups that suggest diversity; I just became a member of the "Raelian Movement" and "Gay Black Jewish KKK for Tolerance and Understanding." Just an idea.

I hope I'm wrong but I heard from my friend which is a dental assistant to a former admin commity member at a canadian dental school that they do check facebook. She told/recommended another employee which was applying to Dental school last year to deactivate her account.

I don't understand why people think they need to deactivate their accounts?? You can make everything on your profile completely private from the outside world, not to mention you can make yourself invisible from the search function too...I just don't see the need.

An article (from the SDN main page a while back) about this exact topic:

http://www.studentdoctor.net/2008/1...tes-a-new-way-to-screen-residency-applicants/

A quote from that article:

"Even when a profile is restricted, however, there are ways around privacy guards. For example, a member of the residency selection committee who is a graduate of your college or medical school, can create a profile using an alumni email address. In doing so, he can acquire access to current students at that institution. In this way, he can circumvent the privacy guards in place at social networking sites such as Facebook."

just as a heads up.

Also, all those silly quizzes like "which tooth are you?" are created by outside of facebook people and they can see your information. My page is private, but I don't regret anything I have put there....well, I'm a mom, so...............If this is true about quizzes & applications people being able to see your profile, I'm sure one of these days an adcom may create a quiz: "which dental school will accept me for fall 2010?" and then the real party will begin! If you are wild or not, I don't think is safe to have a public profile, so make it private like Vict0ria said 👍

well if you have your privacy settings set so that only friends can see your profile, i really don't see why it'd be necessary to deactivate an account.

True, but that's why you change all your privacy settings to "Only Friends" instead of "My Networks and friends"...that way the ONLY way anyone can see anything on your profile is if they personally request to be your friend. I really don't even have anything inappropriate on Facebook...I just feel like, even aside from applying to dental school, who wants all those pics/info out for the whole world to see anyway?

Well said. I agree 👍

😀You guys (and gals) are too paranoid. Make your accounts private and, instead of worrying about facebook, concentrate on the application process 😀. That 0.1 GPA difference is probably 100 times more important =))

to stop all your worries then don't add people you dont know in this way you'll prevent certain problems

I closed down my account for awhile during last year's application cycle. Better safe than sorry.

I have heard from different reliable sources that schools pay companies/programs that are able to override the privacy settings and see everything even if you have it set to only friends.

Therefore I recently deactivated my account just to be safe.

Just change your name. I know many people who are applying to professional school or residencies who change their last name to one that has the last name incorporated somehow in the name or that sounds the same: "Landerson" instead of "anderson" or "Dough" instead of "Doe"

I cannot believe that schools even have enough time to do that. Plus, unless you're snorting cocaine or shooting up in the photo's, I doubt anyone has pictures that would severely jeopardize their chances of admittance. Anyways, I hope they do break through my privacy settings. Then they can see i'm the best looking son of a b!itch in the world, and I ain't ever gonna die

... i'd be more concerned with how easily they can figure out who we are by looking at our predents profile. then seeing what schools we applied to/rejected from, and what we write on this forum on any topic....

Hmmm, good point...
Having the date you interviewed is a complete give away if your stats are also there. That's why I only say good things about schools..

honestly, why would you post ******ed pictures of yourself on facebook to begin with? if you are posting pictures of yourself drunk or doing inappropriate things, the issue is not your choice of life style, but your lack of decent judgement. sure, people are going to drink/party/do whatever that some people might say " oh this is inappropriate" , but that in and of itself doesn't/shouldn't factor into your acceptance to dental school. it's the fact that you'd have no shame to post pictures of yourself being this way.

Like stated earlier i dont think admissions has enough time to go through everyones profile. But like everyone else said, make all your settings private. For example, on my photos, im the only one that can see my photos, i even restricted them from friends. I may have some photos that i thought were cool 5 yrs ago and now im at an age that i no longer want everyone else i come into contact with to see them. just make everything private and you'll be fine.

Regardless of what adcoms will do, it amazes me on what people put on their facebook. If you are worry that the content might portrait you in a negative way, you might want to reconsider on your facebook usage. Remember once a picture/comment is posted, it will most likely be forever even if you close your account or make it private.

JUST USE YOUR COMMON SENSE!!!!

Exactly. Heck, I know who some predents people are when I go to interviews because of simple deductive reasoning: they are from such and such state, went to such and such school. Then when they put all the schools you've interviewed at and a link to your SDN profile, its like they pretty much know your whole life story.

That's why I'm not going to post any predent info until after accepted.

And to think people on SDN berated me for being "paranoid" just a couple months back because I wouldn't post my complete stats on predent.

I think another reason you got "berated" is because when you but 0's across the board for you DAT and still select which schools you applied/interviewed at it really messses up the average GPA/DAT trends for those schools....Its really annoying

I understand if you wanna be paranoid, but if you are gunna do that dont select schools where you got interviewed. Or just dont have a predents at all

It defeats the purpose of predents.com...

Deactivating your facebook isn't enough...😎
They can still see it.

AMEN TO THAT BROTHER!!!

yup - google indexes everything into its megacookie.

I have heard of a lot of people deactivating/inactivating, removing pictures, taking off info, etc. to their facebook account during interviews. I think this is stupid. Just set your account to private and schools won't be able to see your personal info. If you are so paranoid you should probably delete everything off your facebook account. You will constantly be worrying that someone will see something through dental school, residency, and your professional career if you care to ride that paranoid train.

My facebook makes me look sexy.... That can only help. In fact, at my interviews I hand out business cards to adcoms containing links to all my twitter-tweets and facey-spaces. Oops... gotta go. Arthur Dugoni just poked me!!!

I literallly just rolled on the floor laughing, that is fuuuunnny:laugh:

I dont know why i find it so funny but im still laughin about it...

I'm not search-able.. and it's on like super private setting. Can't see my profile pic without being my friend (or even click on me for more info).. and u can't even add me. My name is fairly common.. and it's not even under my legal name.. so i think i'm good.

Whats your name???

😀

I put on my status that I love working in dental offices and then the next week I got 2 interviews. I feel like I'm being watched...

I think it's actually to your advantage if they can see your facebook account. I've actually tried to add admissions members who have facebooks to my account. I still have to delete some pics of me doing keg stands but I think it shows that you have good social status if there are lots of pics of you drinking.

Not to threadjack, but I've found that my DAT scores show up as "0/0/0" when mousing over my user name (shloopy) on Case Western's "Interviewed" column, even though I've entered all my scores and they appear correctly on my profile page. I'm not purposely trying to distort the averages, but there may be a bug in the system (or I'm missing something obvious... 😕 ) when you see people's stats show up as "0/0/0".

No way. Facebook would be sued immediately if this were the case. I'm sure Facebook would close any such loopholes as soon as they were found.

Not if you have search indexing shut off in privacy options. Learn to use the controls and it won't be an issue, guys.

Facebook soldout all privacy for users. Companies can buy rights to see your full account. Even things you have deleted.

And no, you can't sue them. They are smarter than that.

You have a reference for this?

It is well known. You can probably google this.
A dental student told me with certainty. He was 100% sure. I will ask who told him.

absolute bologna.

it the privacy statement i have previously read, and now i just googled, that facebook does sell ur info, but they sell it to advertisers, ever notice that those ads on the side a usually somewhat relevant to you? And it is not in the fashion of "hey, im a big important web salesman, can i have access to johnny smiths profile?"
