to what lengths are you going to protect your image? closing your account for a while? getting rid of photos?

I acctually heard that dental and medical schools pay to have access to profiles on facebook. I'm not chancing it, so I just deactiviated my acount. lol
No way, the law suit would be staggering.
I hope I'm wrong but I heard from my friend which is a dental assistant to a former admin commity member at a canadian dental school that they do check facebook. She told/recommended another employee which was applying to Dental school last year to deactivate her account.
An article (from the SDN main page a while back) about this exact topic:
http://www.studentdoctor.net/2008/1...tes-a-new-way-to-screen-residency-applicants/
A quote from that article:
"Even when a profile is restricted, however, there are ways around privacy guards. For example, a member of the residency selection committee who is a graduate of your college or medical school, can create a profile using an alumni email address. In doing so, he can acquire access to current students at that institution. In this way, he can circumvent the privacy guards in place at social networking sites such as Facebook."
just as a heads up.
True, but that's why you change all your privacy settings to "Only Friends" instead of "My Networks and friends"...that way the ONLY way anyone can see anything on your profile is if they personally request to be your friend. I really don't even have anything inappropriate on Facebook...I just feel like, even aside from applying to dental school, who wants all those pics/info out for the whole world to see anyway?
I cannot believe that schools even have enough time to do that. Plus, unless you're snorting cocaine or shooting up in the photo's, I doubt anyone has pictures that would severely jeopardize their chances of admittance. Anyways, I hope they do break through my privacy settings. Then they can see i'm the best looking son of a b!itch in the world, and I ain't ever gonna dieI have heard from different reliable sources that schools pay companies/programs that are able to override the privacy settings and see everything even if you have it set to only friends.
Therefore I recently deactivated my account just to be safe.
Hmmm, good point...
Having the date you interviewed is a complete give away if your stats are also there. That's why I only say good things about schools..
... i'd be more concerned with how easily they can figure out who we are by looking at our predents profile. then seeing what schools we applied to/rejected from, and what we write on this forum on any topic....
Exactly. Heck, I know who some predents people are when I go to interviews because of simple deductive reasoning: they are from such and such state, went to such and such school. Then when they put all the schools you've interviewed at and a link to your SDN profile, its like they pretty much know your whole life story.
That's why I'm not going to post any predent info until after accepted.
And to think people on SDN berated me for being "paranoid" just a couple months back because I wouldn't post my complete stats on predent.
I think another reason you got "berated" is because when you but 0's across the board for you DAT and still select which schools you applied/interviewed at it really messses up the average GPA/DAT trends for those schools....Its really annoying
I understand if you wanna be paranoid, but if you are gunna do that dont select schools where you got interviewed. Or just dont have a predents at all
It defeats the purpose of predents.com...
Deactivating your facebook isn't enough...😎
They can still see it.
yup - google indexes everything into its megacookie.
My facebook makes me look sexy.... That can only help. In fact, at my interviews I hand out business cards to adcoms containing links to all my twitter-tweets and facey-spaces. Oops... gotta go. Arthur Dugoni just poked me!!!
I'm not search-able.. and it's on like super private setting. Can't see my profile pic without being my friend (or even click on me for more info).. and u can't even add me. My name is fairly common.. and it's not even under my legal name.. so i think i'm good.
HahaI put on my status that I love working in dental offices and then the next week I got 2 interviews. I feel like I'm being watched...
I think it's actually to your advantage if they can see your facebook account. I've actually tried to add admissions members who have facebooks to my account. I still have to delete some pics of me doing keg stands but I think it shows that you have good social status if there are lots of pics of you drinking.

Not to threadjack, but I've found that my DAT scores show up as "0/0/0" when mousing over my user name (shloopy) on Case Western's "Interviewed" column, even though I've entered all my scores and they appear correctly on my profile page. I'm not purposely trying to distort the averages, but there may be a bug in the system (or I'm missing something obvious... 😕 ) when you see people's stats show up as "0/0/0".I think another reason you got "berated" is because when you but 0's across the board for you DAT and still select which schools you applied/interviewed at it really messses up the average GPA/DAT trends for those schools....Its really annoying

No way. Facebook would be sued immediately if this were the case. I'm sure Facebook would close any such loopholes as soon as they were found.
Not if you have search indexing shut off in privacy options. Learn to use the controls and it won't be an issue, guys.
Facebook soldout all privacy for users. Companies can buy rights to see your full account. Even things you have deleted.
And no, you can't sue them. They are smarter than that.
You have a reference for this?
It is well known. You can probably google this.
A dental student told me with certainty. He was 100% sure. I will ask who told him.
