I just received this email and thought I would post it here for others.

In case you were not aware: employers and administrators at UF actively search these sights to check for inappropriate pics, things said, etc. If you are applying for a job or hold a position in SG or an organization please view your postings and take down stuff that may represent you or the college or your organization in a negative way.
Here is some advice from BOCC: The Division of Student Affairs has released some suggestions to prevent your facebook/myspace/etc profiles from becoming a liability in job hunting - see link & forward to your organizations if applicable.

The internet is catching up to us. It is such a beautiful thing too. What a shame that you can't be whoever you want in your personal life without worrying how it will affect your professional life. I guess I will have to abandon myspace when I am a P3-----until then it will continue to suck the life out of me. 😀

There is a girl I work with who tells the pharmacy manager that she goes home every weekend to go to church with her parents. She said she was going "home" for spring break....

This is how she justifies never working on weekends.

NOT TRUE. She goes out of town to party most weekends and went to the beach for Spring Break. How do I know?

FACEBOOK!

I deactivated my Facebook. With school and trying to have a REAL life outside of that, I can't keep up with anything other than SDN, MySpace, and LiveJournal, with the last two not being checked daily.

I think ya'll are bein hypersensitive. I talk mad **** on my myspace about my current rotations....if someone that shouldn't be reading it read it...then so what. Maybe they shouldnt be stickin their noses where it doesnt belong.

Well.... this is, after all, the INTERNET. Technically, anyone's "nose" can go anywhere. Regardless of your personal opinions, the reality is that you need to be selective with what you choose to publicize.

No kidding....but we're all human. It IS ok to show your fun side. I'm targeting alwaystired and the reference to "What a shame that you can't be whoever you want in your personal life without worrying how it will affect your professional life. How about Friendster, do they check those too? I thought it was mostly Facebook that employers targeted.

That's so sneaky of her!! I think you should call her out on it. 🙄

It's always nice to know that employers can shatter the long standing tradition of privacy in the home. Oh wait. There isn't one and it's really pretty sad.

Then again you can always use it to your advantage. Set up a fake site that shows what an upstanding and dedicated student you are.

I was being slighly sarcastic. While I wish you could have your private life and your professional life, the truth is, you really can't. I think it is almost criminal that they can discriminate against you based on what you do on your free time, but I am not going to risk it. My sites will have a cleaning up when the time comes. I'd rather have a good job than a truthful myspace and unfortunately you do have to choose because big brother is watching.

I don't understand, I thought someone had to be your friend before they could see your profile and nasty little pictures on facebook?

Only if you set it so that just your friends can see it. The default is for your profile to be viewable to anyone at your school.

i love facebook.

a teacher at my school got fired bc some kids found her extremely scandalous myspace account.

who's "we"??? :scared:

my facebook and myspace are my calm accounts...
its my SDN account that is scandalous

I wish we could all speak our minds all the time....

people who do not go to your school or who are not your facebook friends can't see your profile except like the first lines which are "name", "year" "student status", "major" basic things like that, but the picture will still be seen.
If you are worried you can just change the settings so that only your friends can see your info.

is there ap specific group(s) on my space for pharmacy students?

This is ludicrous. My profile reeks of jokes and sarcastic tones. They're going to judge people based on a website some use for fun??

I'm guessing joining a group called "I must have been drunk when I chose my college" might have a bad impact on your future.

"Be conscious of how much time you spend on internet sites like Facebook and blogs. It is easy to waste a lot of time that could be spent being more productive."

So if a person updates his/her livejournal twice a day, maybe.. that person is not productive?

:\
