Hi forum,

Already been accepted to some programs so now the tricky part beings, getting financial aid. I have already submitted my FAFSA for this year and it is still processing. I am completely new to this FAFSA process for pharmacy programs. I will hopefully be taking out stafford and perkins and then filling the gap with GRAD plus or maybe private. We will see maybe this sounds too good to be true?

Anyways post away! I hope this will help us clear up some problems!👍

I've been working on my matriculation package.. havn't even thought about filling out FAFSA yet, just how much loans I'm about to take out.... 😱😱

actually took me about 15 minutes for the FAFSA, they made it easier. thank the stars😱

how much was your estimated loan? mine came up to be

Direct Stafford Loan Estimate - $20,500.00

did i do it right? with EFC of 0

uh same. I think thats what everyone gets before specific estimates! LOL. i was kinda worried about mine. 20k for me aint gonna cut it.

For the "School Selection" part, it has you put up to 10 colleges... I already know where I'm going but how to people who haven't decided yet fill out this part? I just want to make sure I'm doing it right...

Also, I just put in my institution, but in the details section it says the estimated tuition for OOS will be 26K, which I assume is their undergraduate tuition not professional.

$20,500 is the most you can get as a grad student with the direct Stafford Loans. Expected Family Commitment (or whatever that C stands for 🙄) is 0 because you file as an independent when going to grad/professional school.

The one thing I was trying to remember, is if there was a specific section where I said I would be attending pharmacy school. I know there are extra things you can get for being in a healthcare profession.

If you already know which institution you will be attending in Fall, you just need to put that particular institution, so you have nothing to worry about!

For people who haven't decided or who have not heard back yet, I remember when I was applying for Undergrad back in high school (kinda feel silly and old to be able to say that now I'm graduated from College! 😛) I picked all the schools I've applied for.
Assuming Professional financial aid is similar to Undergrad financial aid -
Schools will send you "financial aid estimate" of some sort once it gets closer to Fall but if you choose not to attend certain institution they will just use those financial aid amount (probably mostly Loans for us..) for other people. If you apply to more than 10, I guess you would pick your top 10? You can always go back and edit schools as part of "correction", especially most people find out admission decisions before the end of Spring.

LOL copy and paste much? Thought they changed my username or something

There was more to that post than met the eye. I had to edit your post to take care of it. 😉

Do any of you know if your aid package is affected if your parents claim you as a dependent on their tax return? My parents claim me every year because it saves them money but I don't want to miss out on loans because of it. Thanks! 🙂

I don't think so. By going to pharmacy school you are now an independent when it comes to the FAFSA. I don't believe it depends on what is filled out for the IRS in that regards.

you are now considered a grad student. Parents are not involved.

I don't know if this question has been answered, but would it be beneficial to put my parents information down?

Medical schools, and presumably pharmacy, schools want your families information for their internal grant/aid decisions.

So it will not affect the amount of federal loans(Stafford or Gradplus) I might receive?

I haven't been accepted to pharmacy school yet but this is good information. I have some questions if you know them feel free to answer:

To those who got their financial aid letter, did you get enough to fund for tuition + living expenses + misc fees?

Is it to our disadvantage/advantage (ie less or more amount of loans) to be listed as independent and didn't make any money in 2012?

What are the limitations of GRAD+ Loan in terms of maximum amount to take out or do we have a certain credit ratings to know how much we can take out?

I have more questions but I think it is better answered by the financial aid people at school...
