you'll get a SAR sometime in the mail in order to confirm that all the info is correct. you only return it if you need to make corrections. from my memory, this is to determine whether or not you'll qualify for the subsidized and unsubsidized federal stafford loans. as far as government grants go for medical school, i don't think so (but i would be happily willing to admit i am wrong on that). in addition to fafsa forms, some schools have their own financial aid forms as well ( i think if you get any grants, they'll come as a result of filling these sorts of forms out). unfortunately, it will all be mostly loans.
are you still planning on columbia? i think they use sallie mae as their private loan provider. you can borrow up to 200k from them. insanely high amount of money to borrow, but columbia's budget is somewhere around 50k/year.
